Lidy Creek is a small stream in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. It is also known as Leidys Creek or Lidy's Creek. This creek is a tributary of Mill Creek.

Lidy Creek is about 1.9 miles (3.1 km) long. It flows through Pittston Township and Dupont. The area of land that drains into the creek, called its watershed, is about 1.50 square miles (3.9 km2).

The creek is considered a Coldwater Fishery. This means its waters are cold enough for certain types of fish to live there. It is also not considered "impaired," which means its water quality is good. Lidy Creek flows near the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport. It also passes by the International Trade Zone Industrial Park.

Where Lidy Creek Flows

Lidy Creek starts on a hill in Pittston Township. It first flows north-northwest for a short distance. Then, it turns northwest and crosses Interstate 476. After this, it enters the town of Dupont.

The creek then turns west-northwest. It later changes direction again, flowing west-southwest. Further downstream, it turns west-northwest once more. It then crosses Interstate 81. After flowing a bit further, Lidy Creek joins Mill Creek. Lidy Creek meets Mill Creek about 2.46 miles (3.96 km) before Mill Creek reaches its own mouth.

Water Quality of Lidy Creek

Lidy Creek has good water quality. It is not considered to be "impaired." This means it is healthy and clean. However, some of its water goes into old mine pools underground. A nearby stream called Collins Creek also loses water this way.

The town of Dupont has a special permit. This permit allows them to release stormwater into Lidy Creek. Stormwater is water from rain or melting snow that flows over land.

Land and Location

The land around Lidy Creek is interesting. Near where Lidy Creek joins Mill Creek, the elevation is about 709 feet (216 m) above sea level. Where the creek begins, its source, the elevation is higher. It is between 1,020 and 1,040 feet (310 and 320 m) above sea level.

The very beginning of Lidy Creek is on a ridge. This ridge is located above the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport. As mentioned, the creek also flows through the International Trade Zone Industrial Park.

Creek's Watershed and Wildlife

The watershed of Lidy Creek covers an area of 1.50 square miles (3.9 km2). This watershed is in the southwest part of the larger Lackawanna River watershed. It includes parts of Pittston Township and Dupont.

Lidy Creek is entirely within the area covered by the United States Geological Survey map called "Avoca." It is one of the two main streams that flow into Mill Creek.

Lidy Creek is known as a Coldwater Fishery. This means its cold water provides a good home for fish that need cool temperatures. The areas higher up in the creek's watershed are considered "high quality." These areas are also mountainous, similar to the areas around Collins Creek.

History of Lidy Creek

Lidy Creek was officially added to the Geographic Names Information System on August 2, 1979. This system keeps track of names for places like rivers and mountains. Its special ID number in the system is 1179320.

The creek is also known by the name Leidys Creek. This name has appeared on maps of county highways. These maps were made by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.

In 2009, there were plans to fix up the banks of Lidy Creek. Also, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport might expand its runways in the future. If this happens, parts of Lidy Creek might need to be moved.
