Early Life
Lin Yanjun was born in Haikou, Hainan, China. Because his parents moved for work, he grew up living in different places like Taiwan, Jiangxi, and Guangdong. He went to Guangdong University of Foreign Studies. His father is from Taiwan and his mother is from Jiangxi. After his first year of college, he took a break to complete his military service in Taiwan. Lin Yanjun can speak several languages, including Mandarin, Cantonese, Minnan, Korean, and English. He also has a younger sister.
When he was 18, a big entertainment company called JYP Entertainment invited him to train with them. However, he decided not to join because he wanted to focus on his studies and military duties first. In 2016, he signed with a Taiwanese company. But when they didn't give him the training they promised, he and other members spoke out. Later, he passed an audition for Banana Entertainment in Shanghai and became a trainee there.
Career
2018: Idol Producer and Nine Percent
Before becoming famous, Lin Yanjun was part of a trainee group called Trainee18. They were under his company, Shanghai Project Banana Co. On January 22, 2018, he released a song called "Rock The Show" with Trainee18.
Soon after, in January 2018, he joined the TV show Idol Producer. This show helped new idols get started. In the final episode, he placed fifth with over 12 million votes. This meant he became a member of a temporary Chinese boy group called Nine Percent. The group officially started on April 6, 2018.
Nine Percent released their first album, 'To The Nines', on November 12, 2018. It had seven songs. Before the group ended on October 6, 2019, they released a second album called 'More Than Forever' on September 26, 2019. This album included a solo song by Lin Yanjun called "Like A Star".
2019–present: Solo Music and Acting
After his debut, Lin Yanjun quickly released his first solo song, "YOU", on August 24, 2018. A few days later, his own studio was officially created. On January 7, 2019, he released his first solo music EP (Extended Play) called Imperfect Love (剛好的傷口). This EP had two songs. It was incredibly popular, earning 5 million yuan (about $700,000 USD) in just 28 seconds! It also broke six sales records on QQ Music, a big music platform. The music video for the EP came out on February 19, 2019.
On March 25, 2019, he won the Best New Singer Award in Hong Kong and Taiwan at the 26th ERC Chinese Top Ten Music Festival. His EP “Imperfect Love” also won the Most Popular EP Award. His single reached number 4 on the Billboard China Social Music Chart in March 2019.
On April 6, 2019, which was Nine Percent's first anniversary, he shared teasers for his second personal music EP, "Escape". This album was released on April 12, 2019, and also had two songs. Lin Yanjun wrote the lyrics for the main song, "Get Outta My Head", and helped create the music for "Over You". He performed both songs live at fan meetings later that month.
On August 24, 2019, he released a new song called "Competitor" (对手). The music video for this song came out on August 30, 2019. It became very popular, reaching 50 million points on the QQ Music MV Peak Chart. Before the song's release, he shared a two-part documentary about it on his Weibo account.
On April 16, 2020, he released another new song, "You Are So Beautiful". This song had a huge number of views in mainland China, over 900 million! It also became popular in other parts of Southeast Asia. Later, on October 13, 2020, he worked with Doja Cat to release a Chinese remix of her hit song "Say So".
Lin Yanjun also started his acting career. On June 13, 2020, he attended the start of filming for his first TV drama, Fall In Love. In this show, he plays the character Xu GuangYao. On September 14, 2020, he also attended the filming start for his second drama, Crush. In Crush, he plays the main male lead, Su NianQin, who is a visually impaired mysterious songwriter.
On his birthday, August 24, 2020, he announced that a new EP would be coming soon. He shared a short preview of a new song. The song, titled "Waiting for the Whole Winter" (等待整個冬天), was from his EP "1995" and was released on October 27. However, the song was temporarily removed because a few lines in the lyrics were very similar to an existing song. "Waiting for the Whole Winter" was created by Lin Yanjun and his friends before he debuted in 2018. He was not involved in writing the lyrics that caused the issue.
