Linwood is located in Worcester County, Massachusetts. It is very close to the nearby villages of Whitinsville and North Uxbridge. Many of the first people to settle in Linwood were French Canadians. They often worked in the local textile factories. The Whitin Cotton Mills were the main industry here. They are a great example of how factories looked in the 1800s.
Linwood's Historic Cotton Mill
The Mumford River was dammed in the early 1800s. This created water power, which helped build the Whitin Machine Works and the Linwood Cotton Mill. The mills also had easy access to the Providence and Worcester Railroad. This made it simple to transport goods in and out of the factories.
In 2011, the historic Linwood Mill was updated. It became a building with 75 apartments for people aged 55 and older. The ground floor of the mill was also turned into 22,000 square feet of commercial space. This area now includes a restaurant, offices, and a wine store.
