Linwood is located between Fraser Township to the north and Kawkawlin Township to the south. It sits near M-13 on the west and the Saginaw Bay of Lake Huron on the east. Bay City is about 12 miles south of Linwood.

Linwood's Past: A Brief History

Linwood has an interesting history that goes back to the 1800s.

Early Beginnings

The area first started as a place called "Terry's Station." This was a depot, or stopping point, on the Mackinaw division of the Michigan Central Railroad. It was named after James G. Terry, who ran a local lumber company.

The First Post Office

James G. Terry was also the first postmaster for a post office named "Terry Station." It opened on February 21, 1872. The post office closed for a short time but reopened on June 6, 1877.

Becoming Linwood

On June 28, 1882, the name of the community was officially changed to Linwood. The name "Linwood" comes from combining "line" and "wood." This is because the community was on the line between two different townships and was also heavily wooded with trees. The railroad station was then renamed "Linwood Park."

About the Linwood Area

The Linwood post office serves a larger area than just the community itself.

ZIP Code Area

The Linwood post office uses the ZIP code 48634. This ZIP code covers parts of Kawkawlin Township and Beaver Township to the south, and parts of Fraser Township and Garfield Township to the north.

Population Information

According to the 2000 census, about 4,684 people lived in the area covered by the 48634 ZIP code.
