The History of Lipscomb
The city of Lipscomb was officially started on June 30, 1910. It was named after L. Y. Lipscomb. He was one of three brothers who first settled in this area in 1885.
Before it was called Lipscomb, the community was known as Wheeling. By 1906, about 200 to 300 people lived there. The name Wheeling came from Wheeling, West Virginia. This was because the owners of the Woodward Iron Company had businesses in both places. Many people in Lipscomb worked for this company.
Y. L. Lipscomb opened a general store in 1890. The very first settlers came to the area much earlier, in the 1830s. Vincent Loveless started his farm here at that time. The first church was built in June 1834. It was a log building called Union Baptist Church. It stood where the current church is today.
