Ginger Foutley: The Main Character

Ginger Foutley is a 12-year-old girl with red hair. She's the main character of the show. At first, she wasn't very popular. But then, Courtney Gripling, a popular girl, decided to be her friend. Through Ginger, Courtney learned about life outside her rich and popular group.

Ginger has two loyal best friends, Dodie Bishop and Macie Lightfoot. They are almost always there to support her.

At home, Ginger's mom, Lois, tries to give her advice. But Ginger often feels too embarrassed to listen. So, she usually learns from her own mistakes.

Ginger's younger brother, Carl, is a fourth-grader. He often tries to use Ginger for his strange experiments. But Ginger usually knows what he's up to and avoids his plans.

Ginger is a very talented writer, especially good at poetry. Her English teacher, Ms. Zorski, really likes her writing. In the end of the series, we see that Ginger grows up to become a successful author.

Ginger's love life had many ups and downs. She liked Ian Richton, but he used her for schoolwork. She also met Sasha at summer camp. Later, she had a complicated relationship with her good friend and neighbor, Darren Patterson. They became a couple in high school. But then, Darren started liking another girl, Simone, and they broke up. Ginger found comfort in a new friend named Orion. However, in a look into the future, it's shown that Ginger and Darren get married and have a baby together.

Carl Foutley: Ginger's Younger Brother

Carl Foutley is Ginger's 9-year-old brother. He's in fourth grade. Carl and his best friend, "Hoodsey" Bishop, come up with many wild schemes. They do their experiments in an old doghouse in the Foutleys' backyard.

Blake, Courtney Gripling's younger brother, often gets caught up in Carl's plans. Blake usually tries to be friends with Carl, but Carl often tries to make Blake look silly.

Carl's favorite saying is "classified." He keeps his plans very secret. Even if he needs help, he reveals as little as possible. Despite his love for weird things, Carl also has a kind heart. He can be very caring when it matters. In the future, Carl and Hoodsey become popular TV reporters.

Lois Foutley: Ginger's Mom

Voiced by Laraine Newman

Lois Foutley is Ginger and Carl's mother. She works as a Nurse. Lois is a caring mom but also strict when needed. For example, she grounded Ginger for wearing makeup when she was too young. With Carl, Lois often takes a "don't ask, don't tell" approach to his strange activities.

Lois was married to Jonas Foutley, who left the family when Carl was young. Later, Lois started dating Dr. David Dave, a coworker from the hospital. He proposed to her, and they got married in the series finale. Many years later, Lois and Dave are seen attending a reading of Ginger's book.

Jonas Foutley: Ginger's Dad

Voiced by Tom Virtue

Jonas Foutley is Ginger and Carl's biological father. He left the family after Carl was born. Ginger didn't have many clear memories of him.

Jonas sometimes appears to give Ginger fatherly advice. He also teaches her about her extended family. Carl, however, is still a bit upset with his dad for leaving. Jonas is described as an "animal lover" and has a pet dog named Ben.

Dr. David Dave: Lois's Husband

Voiced by David Jeremiah

Dr. David Dave works closely with Lois at the hospital. He had a crush on Lois for a long time. He proposed to her, and they got married in the series finale. His mother didn't approve at first, but the wedding still happened. Dr. Dave becomes Ginger's stepfather.

The Bishops: Ginger's Friends' Family

Dodie Bishop: Ginger's Best Friend

Voiced by Aspen Miller

Deirdre "Dodie" Bishop is 12 years old and one of Ginger's closest friends. Dodie is known for talking a lot and loving gossip. She often tells Ginger the latest news about the popular kids. Dodie really wants to be popular. She sometimes does things she shouldn't to try and fit in.

For example, she once pretended to have a broken leg to join the cheerleading squad. But Ginger and Macie found out her trick. When Dodie realizes she's gone too far, she always tries to apologize and fix things. She is a loyal friend and usually wants her best friends to be included in her plans.

Dodie is the daughter of Joann and David Charles Bishop. Her mom, Joann, can be very critical. Dodie is very close to Ginger and Macie. She gets upset if she feels like she might lose her place in their friendship.

When she goes to high school, Dodie tries to become a cheerleader. She becomes slightly more careful about social situations and gossip. In the end of the series, Dodie marries her boyfriend, Chet Zipper, and they have a baby daughter.

Robert Joseph 'Hoodsey' Bishop: Carl's Best Friend

Hoodsey Joseph Bishop is Dodie's younger brother. He is 9 years old and Carl Foutley's best friend. Hoodsey is very trusting and believes almost anything he's told. He usually helps Carl with his plans. He's called "Hoodsey" because he always wears a purple hooded sweatshirt.

Hoodsey is very attached to his mom. He often repeats things she tells him. He uses his mom's advice to try and stop Carl's schemes, but it rarely works. In the series finale, Hoodsey and Carl become popular TV reporters.

Joann Bishop: Dodie and Hoodsey's Mom

Voiced by Susan Krebs

Joann Bishop is Dodie and Hoodsey's mother. She can be quite irritable. She doesn't seem to like Hoodsey's friendship with Carl Foutley. She also barely tolerates Lois Foutley. However, she approves of Dodie and Ginger's friendship.

Joann once took a substitute teaching job at Dodie's school. She tried to act like a teenager to get the popular kids to like her. Dodie later found out that her mom was similar to her in middle school: eager for popularity but often failing. Joann is shown to be a bit nervous and likes to be in control.

Dave Bishop: Dodie and Hoodsey's Dad

Voiced by John Astin (season 1) and Dan Castellaneta (seasons 2-3)

David Charles "Dave" Bishop is Dodie and Hoodsey's father. He is usually seen relaxing on the couch. He is calmer than his wife and more accepting of Carl as Hoodsey's friend. He is a loving dad and cares a lot about his children's happiness. He and Hoodsey enjoy watching The Weather Channel together.

The Lightfoots: Macie's Family

Macie Lightfoot: Ginger's Other Best Friend

Voiced by Jackie Harris

Macie Lightfoot is Ginger's other best friend, also 12 years old. Macie often seems worried. She is allergic to many things and doesn't like change. She is shown as the "smartest" one of the group and knows a lot about many subjects. She can be quite childish, possibly because her parents are often away.

Macie, Dodie, and Ginger once planned to perform a skit about "The Little Seal Girl" for their school talent show. When Dodie and Ginger backed out, Macie performed alone and won the show. Her friends congratulated her, and they made up.

Macie's parents once forgot her thirteenth birthday. To make up for it, they treated her like she was much younger. Macie enjoyed the attention, but Ginger worried about her. Macie later told her parents she was 13. Macie's birthday is April 22. She is seen at Ginger's book reading in the series finale.

Robert "Bobby" and Roberta "Bobbie" Lightfoot: Macie's Parents

Voiced by Michael McKean (Bobby) and Mary Gross (Bobbie)

Macie's parents are Bobby and Bobbie Lightfoot. They are both psychologists. They are also very forgetful, like when they forgot Macie's birthday. They often treat Macie like she is much younger than she is.

The Pattersons: Ginger's Neighbors

Darren Patterson: Ginger's Friend and Love Interest

Voiced by Bradley Pierce (pilot); Kenny Blank (series)

Darren Patterson, 13 years old, is Ginger's long-time friend and next-door neighbor. He is calm and reliable. At first, his headgear made him unpopular. But when he got it removed, he became attractive and popular.

He briefly dated Miranda Killgallen. He later told Ginger he loved her when she moved away, and they became a couple. After some problems, Darren left Ginger for an older cheerleader named Simone. This upset Ginger very much.

In the series finale, Darren and Simone are still dating. However, a look into the future shows that Ginger and Darren get married and have a child together.

Will Patterson: Darren's Older Brother

Will Patterson is Darren's 16-year-old older brother. He is very popular at high school and a football star. He takes his role as an older brother seriously. He sometimes gives Darren advice.

Mr. Patterson: Darren's Dad

Voiced by Billy Brown

Darren and Will's father is known for giving "head noogies" (a playful rub on the head). He once gave Ginger a head noogie to congratulate her on a poem.

Mrs. Patterson: Darren's Mom

Darren and Will's mother is seen a few times. She was very happy when Darren got his headgear off. She also worried about Darren when Ginger left for a semester.

The Griplings: The Popular Family

Courtney Gripling: The Popular Girl

Courtney Claire Gripling is 12 years old and the most popular girl at Lucky Jr. High. She is curious about the world outside her rich lifestyle. She knows a lot about fashion and how to be popular. Courtney can sometimes be mean or shallow. But she can also be a caring friend.

Courtney is very innocent because of her sheltered life. She doesn't understand simple things, like how a vacuum cleaner works. She quickly becomes close to people who show her honest affection. Courtney liked Ginger early in the series. She wanted to see how Ginger would do in a popular group. To her surprise, Ginger managed well, and they became real friends.

Courtney's closest friend is Miranda, who doesn't like Ginger. Courtney's group of friends usually follows her lead. In the series finale, Courtney's family loses their money. They have to move out of their mansion. They end up buying the Foutleys' old house. Courtney and Ginger remain friends.

Blake Gripling: Courtney's Younger Brother

Blake Sofia Gripling is Courtney's younger brother. He is 7 years old and Carl and Hoodsey's classmate. He is smart but also spoiled. Even though he often fights with Carl, deep down, he wants to be Carl's friend. Winston, the Griplings' butler, is like a father figure to Blake.

Claire Gripling: Courtney's Mom

Voiced by Candi Milo

Claire Gripling is Courtney and Blake's mother. She believes in spoiling her children. She and Courtney often go to Paris to see new fashions. Claire has a lot to learn about being a good person.

Prescott Gripling: Courtney's Dad

Voiced by Sam McMurray

Prescott Gripling is Courtney and Blake's father. In the series finale, he was arrested for illegal business activities. He lost all his family's money to pay for his crimes.

Winston: The Griplings' Butler

Winston is the loyal butler to the Griplings. He is like a father figure to Courtney and Blake. He often helps Blake with his plans.

The Killgallens: The Antagonists

Miranda Killgallen: Courtney's Right-Hand Woman

Miranda Killgallen is Courtney's closest friend and often Ginger's main rival. Miranda dislikes Ginger because she fears Ginger might replace her as Courtney's best friend. Miranda has tried many ways to make Ginger look bad, like tricking her or making false accusations. However, she usually fails.

Sometimes, Miranda shows her weaker side. She has a difficult relationship with her strict parents. She also has very few true friends. When Courtney briefly lost her popularity, Miranda quickly left her to join another group. Miranda is known for her sharp, sarcastic comments.

Officer Killgallen: Miranda's Dad

Voiced by Richard McGonagle

Miranda's father is a police officer. Miranda once used this to her advantage to get Ginger into trouble. He also runs a military camp where Miranda and Darren were students.

Teachers and School Staff

Principal Milty

Voiced by Jerry Houser

Principal Milty is the principal of Lucky Jr. High. He used to be the principal of Lucky Elementary. Like most teachers, he doesn't like Carl and Hoodsey.

Ms. Zorski: Ginger's English Teacher

Voiced by Elizabeth Halpern

Ms. Zorski is Ginger's English teacher. She always encourages Ginger's writing talent. She told Ginger that she loved her poem but was also concerned by it. Ginger stays in touch with Ms. Zorski even after graduating from junior high.

Mrs. Gordon: Carl's Teacher

Voiced by Kathleen Freeman

Mrs. Elaine Gordon was Carl's teacher. She was not very patient and often became a victim of Carl's pranks. One prank was so bad that it made her retire. She passed away shortly after.

  • The episode No Hope for Courtney was dedicated to Kathleen Freeman, who died on August 23, 2001.

Mr. Hepper: Carl's Music Teacher

Voiced by Andre Ware

Mr. Hepper is Carl and Hoodsey's music teacher. He is laid-back and is the only teacher who likes them. He also took over Mrs. Gordon's classes after she passed away.

Mr. Cilia: The Science Teacher

Voiced by Lewis Arquette

Mr. Cilia is the science teacher at Lucky Jr. High. He teaches chemistry and biology. Ginger is one of his favorite students because she meets his high standards.

  • Arquette died on February 10, 2001. The episode Piece of My Heart was dedicated to him.

Classmates

Ian Richton: The Soccer Star

Voiced by Adam Wylie

Ian Richton is the school's soccer star and a popular boy. Both Ginger and Miranda liked him. He was assigned to work with Ginger in chemistry class. Ginger realized he was using her to do all the work. After the first season, Ian had no more speaking roles, but he is still seen at school.

Mipsy Mipson: The Third Most Popular Girl

Voiced by Sandy Fox

Melissa "Mipsy" Mipson is likely the third most popular girl at Lucky Jr. High. She is close to Miranda and also dislikes Ginger. She often helps Miranda play tricks on Ginger. Not much else is known about Mipsy.

Chet Zipper: The School Announcer

Voiced by Hope Levy

Chet Zipper, 14 years old, is a regular student at Lucky Jr. High. He is the school announcer. He speaks in a dull voice and uses words like "uh" and "like" a lot. He becomes Dodie's boyfriend. In the series finale, Chet and Dodie are shown as a married couple with a daughter.

Noelle Sussman: Carl's Love Interest

Voiced by Emily Kapnek

Noelle Sussman is always in Carl's class. She has telekinetic powers, meaning she can move things with her mind. Carl once used her to test his "disappearing powder." He later realized he missed her. They develop a relationship. Noelle is originally from Portugal.

Maude: Carl's Elderly Friend

Voiced by Carol Kane

In the episode "Carl and Maude," Carl meets an elderly prankster named Maude at a retirement home. They become good friends and pull many pranks together. Carl even invites her to dinner. Sadly, Maude passes away during dinner. Maude later reappears as a spirit.
