Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Powerpuff Girls is a popular American animated TV show. It's all about three super-powered little girls: Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup. They live in the fictional city of Townsville.

These amazing girls star in the original TV series, an anime version, and the 2016 reboot series.

Their family includes Professor Utonium, who is their father and creator. Other important characters are The Mayor, who is kind but a bit silly and often calls the girls for help. Ms. Bellum is the Mayor's smart secretary, and Ms. Keane is the girls' sweet kindergarten teacher.

The main villains they fight are Mojo Jojo, a super-smart ape, and HIM, a mysterious demon. Other bad guys include Fuzzy Lumpkins, a Bigfoot-like hillbilly, and Princess Morbucks, a spoiled rich girl. There's also the Gangreen Gang, a group of green-skinned teens, and the Amoeba Boys, who are not very smart. Finally, the Rowdyruff Boys are evil boy versions of the Powerpuff Girls.

The show's creator, Craig McCracken, first thought of the characters in 1991. He made a short pilot called The Whoopass Girls. After some changes, a new pilot aired on Cartoon Network in 1995. Viewers loved it, so the full series started in 1998. The original show ran until 2005.

How the Powerpuff Girls Started

In June 1991, Craig McCracken was a student studying animation. He drew three girls on orange paper for his brother's birthday card. The next year, he used two of these girls in his short film, Whoopass Stew! A Sticky Situation!.

McCracken wanted to make a superhero film. He felt that the usual muscular male heroes were overused. After drawing the three little girls, he imagined them as superheroes.

Cartoon Network liked his idea in 1993. The name was changed from Whoopass to Powerpuff. The girls then appeared in two short cartoons called What a Cartoon! before getting their own TV series.

The Powerpuff Girls, Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup, were created by Professor Utonium. He wanted to make the "perfect little girl." He used a mix of "sugar, spice, and everything nice."

But then, he accidentally spilled a mystery substance called "Chemical X" into the mix. This created three super-powered girls instead! Each girl has one of the ingredients as her main personality trait.

They all have amazing powers. These include flight, superhuman strength, super speed, and being hard to hurt. They also have x-ray vision, super senses, heat vision, and can shoot energy.

The girls have big eyes, short arms and legs, and no noses or ears. They wear dresses that match their eye colors. They also wear white tights and black shoes.

Blossom

Blossom is the smart leader of the Powerpuff Girls. Her special ingredient is "everything nice." Her color is bright pink. She has long red-orange hair in a ponytail with a red bow.

She was named Blossom because she spoke so openly after being created. She is usually the most calm and intelligent of the group. Blossom is also a great planner and very determined. Her unique power is freezing things with her breath.

In the 2016 reboot, Blossom is still the leader. She loves being organized and hates messes. She is an overachiever and has perfect attendance at school. Sometimes she can be stubborn, but she always comes through. She still has ice breath and can create pink energy.

Bubbles

Bubbles is the "softest and sweetest" of the three girls. Her color is blue, and her ingredient is "sugar." She has blonde hair in pigtails.

Bubbles is kind and sweet, but she can also get very angry. She fights monsters just as well as her sisters. Her best friend is a stuffed octopus named "Octi." She also loves animals very much.

Bubbles can understand many languages, especially Spanish. She can also talk to animals. Her unique powers include powerful sonic screams and creating thunder with a single clap.

In the 2016 reboot, Bubbles still has blonde pigtails. She loves animals and tries to solve problems nicely. She can be a bit innocent but also gets mad easily. She is good with computers and creates popular video games. Her special abilities include talking to animals and making blue energy.

Buttercup

Buttercup is the "tough hotheaded tomboy" of the group. Her ingredient is "spice," and her color is green. She has short black hair.

Buttercup loves to get dirty, fight hard, and play rough. She doesn't plan much; she's all about action. Her unique power is curling her tongue. The creator, Craig McCracken, first wanted to name her "Bud." Buttercup didn't like her name at first.

In the 2016 reboot, Buttercup looks almost the same. She is still a tomboy who loves action and sports. She hangs out with boys and has fun. Like her original self, she is afraid of spiders. She has a temper that can get out of control. She is often against Manboy, who calls her "princess," which she hates. Buttercup can create green energy and turn it into weapons.

Before the girls were created, Mojo Jojo was Professor Utonium's pet chimpanzee, Jojo. The same accident that created the girls also gave Jojo his super-intelligence. Even though he's smart, his plans often have small mistakes. He rarely wins against the girls because their superpowers are too strong for his inventions.

However, he is very good at tricking people. He often fools the girls into thinking he has changed. Mojo lives in an observatory on top of a volcano in Townsville. In the 2016 TV series, Mojo has an evil mother.

She hates the girls because they wouldn't let her join their team. Her father's face is always hidden, but he spoils her a lot. It seems his patience has limits, and Princess fears making him truly angry. Thanks to him, she has endless money. In the 2016 TV series, Princess Morbucks wants to kill and replace the Powerpuff Girls, not just join them.

The Gangreen Gang

The Gangreen Gang is a group of green-skinned teenage punks. They don't have superpowers, so they are usually not a big threat to the girls. But they can be very dangerous when they are motivated. The Amoeba Boys are a group of three mutant amoebas. They act like mobsters. These criminals want to be seen as serious villains. They want to fight the Powerpuff Girls and even go to jail.

But their brains are too simple to plan big crimes. They usually only do small things like littering. They thought stealing an orange was their biggest crime ever. They are Townsville's least harmful villains. They even have a kind of friendship with the girls. Their actions have sometimes accidentally put the girls and the town in danger.

  • Bossman: He is the leader and main speaker of the Amoeba Boys. He wears a gray fedora.
  • Junior: He is the smallest Amoeba Boy. He wears a black cap and often repeats what Bossman says.

She first appeared in a special called "The Power of Four." Her hair is electric blue, and she wears a pastel blue hairband with a pink heart.

In flashbacks, Professor Utonium tried to create the perfect girl ten years earlier. He used sugar, spice, and everything nice. But he accidentally added "Chemical W," creating Bliss. Mojo Jojo was Bliss's childhood friend when he was the Professor's lab assistant.

Bliss has super strength, flight, super hearing, laser vision, and is hard to hurt. But unlike Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup, Bliss also has mind powers. Her powers are hard to control when she's emotional. Once, her powers destroyed the Professor's house when she had a tantrum.

Bliss then flew to Bird Poop Island to keep everyone safe from her powers. There, she met her pet elephant, Mee. After years away, Bliss returned to Townsville. She saved the girls from a villain and started training to control her powers.

The Professor told her not to use her powers again, saying she wasn't ready. But Mee convinced Bliss to prove him wrong. The girls invited her to defeat a villain. Her anger got the best of her, and she almost hurt the girls. Mee then revealed he was actually HIM in disguise!

HIM tricked Bliss into joining with him, causing chaos in Townsville. But Bliss broke free from HIM with Mojo Jojo's help. Bliss, Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup then combined their powers to defeat HIM.

Bliss later left Earth to move the planet Saturn back to its correct place in the Solar System. She promised to return to see the Professor and the Powerpuff Girls again.

The girls found him in his secret hideout. He told them he was a lonely kid who built toy robots. But a monster the Powerpuff Girls defeated accidentally fell on his house, destroying his robots. He blamed the girls and wanted revenge.

The Powerpuff Girls defeated him when he called Blossom "unorganized." But it turned out to be a hologram. Later, he stole a power suit to fight them but was defeated by the Professor. In another episode, he hacked a robot clone of Bubbles to destroy the girls. But Robo-Bubbles sacrificed herself to stop him.

He survived an explosion and pretended to be the Professor. In the episode "Lights Out!", he disguised himself as Bliss. He gave everyone in Townsville a special candy that made them sick.
