List of colonial governors of South Carolina facts for kids
South Carolina was once a colony of Great Britain, from 1670 until the American Revolution began in 1775. It was named after King Charles II of England, as Carolus is Latin for "Charles". During this time, different governors led the colony. This article lists the people who served as governors of South Carolina during its colonial period.
Early Governors: The Proprietary Period (1670–1719)
During this time, South Carolina was owned by eight special people called the Lords Proprietors. King Charles II of England gave them the land in 1663 to thank them for their help. The governors during this period were chosen either by these Proprietors or by a group called the Grand Council in Charles Town.

Royal Governors: The Royal Period (1719–1776)
During the Royal Period, the King or Queen of Great Britain officially appointed the governors. However, the British government, especially a group called the Board of Trade, usually chose who would serve. The governor acted like a representative of the British monarch in the colony.
The governor had a lot of power. They could appoint officials in the colony or even remove them. They also had to approve any new laws passed by the local assembly. They could even stop the assembly from meeting if they wanted to.
