Numbered highways in New York
Interstate • U.S. • N.Y. (former) • Reference • County

Welcome to Warren County, New York! This area has a huge network of roads, stretching over 1,248 miles (2,009 km). These roads are looked after by the New York State Department of Transportation, the county itself, and local towns and villages.

About 219 miles (352 km) of these roads are state highways. The county also takes care of another 245 miles (394 km) of roads. Some roads are short links, while others are part of much longer routes. Warren County is home to one major Interstate Highway, I-87, also known as the Adirondack Northway. You'll also find U.S. Route 9, eight state-numbered routes, and 81 county-maintained roads. Many county roads are short, connecting bigger highways.

The longest state route in Warren County is NY 9N, which runs for about 48.58 miles (78.18 km). The shortest is NY 911E, a tiny 0.2-mile (0.32 km) road near Glens Falls. These state highways connect many important places like Glens Falls, Warrensburg, Queensbury, and the village of Lake George.

Interstate and U.S. Routes: What are they?

Lake George Vil 1

Interstate 87 (I-87) is the only Interstate Highway that goes through Warren County. It covers about 38.53 miles (62.01 km) here. This highway has nine exits that lead to places like Glens Falls, Queensbury, Warrensburg, Lake George, Bolton Landing, and Chestertown. I-87 used to end in downtown Lake George. The old two-lane part of it is now called NY 912Q.

Warren County has had two U.S. Highways. The one still here is U.S. Route 9 (US 9). It runs for over 40.43 miles (65.07 km) in the county. Since it was created in 1926, US 9 has served Glens Falls, Queensbury, Lake George village, Warrensburg, and Chestertown before heading into Essex County. US 9 once had four smaller routes connected to it in the county, but only two are left today.

Another U.S. Highway, US 4, was also created in 1926. It first ended in Glens Falls at US 9. But in 1930, it was changed to follow the Hudson River south, completely bypassing Warren County.

State Touring Routes and Scenic Byways: Explore the Beauty!

State touring routes have black and white signs. Smaller green signs are also placed along the parts of these roads maintained by the state. Since New York's modern road system started in 1924, 18 state touring routes have passed through Warren County. Today, only 10 of them remain.

Some early routes like NY 6, NY 10, and NY 30 entered Warren County in 1924, running north to south. Another route, NY 47, was added by 1926, going from Chestertown to Ticonderoga. NY 6 was replaced by US 9 in 1927. The other early routes were either moved out of the county or removed in 1930.

After the 1930 changes, the state route system in Warren County looked much like it does now, with a few differences. NY 9K was assigned to the old path of NY 10 between Saratoga Springs and Lake George. NY 47 was given a new path between Lake George village and Hague, running along the western side of Lake George.

NY 9N first started in Elizabethtown. It was later extended south twice. Around 1936, it reached Lake George, replacing NY 47. In the early 1950s, it went even further to Saratoga Springs, taking over NY 9K. NY 32B, an alternate route for NY 32, also started in Glens Falls and followed the Hudson River into Washington County. NY 9M, a north-south road connecting US 9 to NY 8, was added a year later but removed around 1939.

By 1940, NY 32 was extended into Warren County, going through Glens Falls and Queensbury. NY 32B used to share a road with NY 32. However, it was shortened around 1962 and then removed around 1965. Part of it was replaced by NY 254, a road that goes around Glens Falls from I-87 to Washington County.

Of the 10 routes currently in Warren County, NY 418 in Warrensburg is the shortest, and NY 9N is the longest. Other active routes include NY 8, which crosses the northern part of the county; NY 9L, a shorter route connected to US 9; NY 149, which links I-87 to the Vermont border; NY 28, which serves western Warren County; and its connected route, NY 28N.

The Adirondacks have 13 New York State Scenic Byways, and three of them are in Warren County!

  • The first is the Roosevelt–Marcy Trail, which uses part of NY 28N.
  • The second is the Dude Ranch Trail, a loop road in Warren and Saratoga counties.
  • The third is the Central Adirondack Trail, which uses parts of NY 9L, US 9, and NY 28.

County Routes: Local Roads

Warren County has 81 roads maintained by the county. Most of these are short roads that connect bigger highways. Some used to be state roads, like CR 64 and CR 62, which were part of NY 9M in the 1930s. CR 79 was part of NY 32 until 1981. Sometimes, one county route number is used for several different roads. For example, CR 11 starts near I-87 in Chestertown but splits into two parts east of Riverbank.

Until 2009, Warren County Routes didn't have the usual road signs. They used small, tab-like signs attached to poles. CR 23 was the only exception, with a normal county route sign.

In November 2007, people in Warren County became worried that the salt used on roads like CR 7, CR 11, and CR 35 was harming Lake George and the surrounding environment. The Warren County Highway Department uses about 9,000 tons (8,200 metric tons) of salt on roads near Lake George every year. This salt is flowing into the lake, which is bad for the environment. The amount of salt in Lake George has doubled since the 1980s. The highway department switched from using sand to using salt to keep drivers safe, even though it impacts the environment. Local officials know this is a problem and are looking for ways to use less salt.

In late 2009, the Warren County Department of Public Works (DPW) started adding the standard pentagon-shaped signs to their county roads. At first, signs were only at the very beginning or end of a road. Roads weren't signed where they met other county or state roads, or where their numbers changed. By 2016, Warren County had put up signs in most places where numbers change, and at some intersections.
