The Speaker of the National Assembly of Kuwait is like the leader or chairperson of Kuwait's main law-making group, called the National Assembly. This person helps make sure meetings run smoothly. They also represent the Assembly.
Right now, there isn't a Speaker. This is because the parliament was closed down, or "dissolved," on February 15, 2024. New elections were held on April 4, 2024. Then, on May 10, 2024, the ruler of Kuwait, Emir Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, announced on TV that the parliament would be dissolved again. He also said that some parts of the country's rules (the constitution) would be paused for the next four years.
What is the Speaker's Job?
The Speaker's main job is to lead the meetings of the National Assembly. They make sure everyone follows the rules. They also help keep discussions fair and organized. The Speaker is chosen by the members of the Assembly.
History of Speakers
Kuwait's National Assembly started in 1962. Since then, many important people have served as Speaker. The first Speaker was Abdullatif Thunayyan Al-Ghanim. He helped set up the Assembly.
Sometimes, the National Assembly has been dissolved. This means it was temporarily closed down. During these times, there was no Speaker. The Assembly was dissolved from 1976 to 1981 and again from 1986 to 1992. It has also been dissolved more recently.
The table below shows a list of all the Speakers of the National Assembly. It also shows when they served and who was the Emir and Prime Minister at that time.
