Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah (born 25 June 1937, died 16 December 2023) was an important leader in Kuwait. He became the 16th Emir of Kuwait (like a king or ruler) on September 29, 2020, and served until he passed away. He took over after his half-brother, Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah. Before becoming Emir, Nawaf held many important jobs, including Minister of Interior and Minister of Defense. He was also chosen as the crown prince (the next in line to rule) in 2006.

Early Life and Education
Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah was born on June 25, 1937. His father was Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, who was the 10th ruler of Kuwait. Nawaf went to different schools in Kuwait as he grew up.
His Career in Government
Nawaf was a very important member of the House of Sabah, which is the ruling family of Kuwait. When he was 25 years old, he became the governor of Hawalli on February 21, 1962. He held this job for many years, until 1978.
After that, he became the Minister of Interior from 1978 to 1988. This role involves keeping the country safe and managing police forces. Then, he was appointed Minister of Defense in 1988. This job means he was in charge of Kuwait's military.
After the Gulf War, Nawaf worked as the acting minister of labor and social affairs from 1991 to 1992.

In 1994, Nawaf was made the deputy chief of the Kuwait National Guard, which is a special security force. He held this position until 2003. In the same year, he became the Minister of Interior again. Later, he was also made the First Deputy Prime Minister of Kuwait. Nawaf worked to help bring different Arab countries closer together.
When Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah became the leader of Kuwait in 2006, he officially named Nawaf as the Crown Prince on February 7, 2006. This meant Nawaf was next in line to become the Emir.
On September 29, 2020, Emir Sabah passed away. The National Assembly (Kuwait's parliament) then announced that Nawaf would be the new Emir of Kuwait.
Family Life
Nawaf married Sharifa Sulaiman Al-Jasem Al-Ghanim. Together, they had four sons and one daughter.
His Passing
On November 29, 2023, Nawaf was taken to the hospital because of a health problem. He passed away on December 16, 2023.
