Sheikh Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah (1885 – 29 January 1950) was an important leader in Kuwait's history. He was the tenth ruler of the Sheikhdom of Kuwait. He led the country from March 29, 1921, until his death on January 29, 1950.
His Life and Leadership
Ahmad was the son of Jaber II Al-Sabah, who was the eighth ruler of Kuwait. Ahmad took over as ruler in February 1921. He followed his uncle, Salim Al-Mubarak Al-Sabah, who was the ninth ruler.
Ahmad played a big part in building Kuwait's defense. He was a top cavalry commander. He also helped create the military of Kuwait and the public security forces. In the early 1920s, he put Sheikh Ali Salem Al-Mubarak Al-Sabah in charge of the defense cavalry and infantry. Later, after a battle in 1928, he gave this command to Sheikh Abdullah Jaber Al-Abdullah II Al-Sabah.
In 1936, some groups in Palestine asked Ahmad Al-Jaber for money. However, he had to say no. This was because of special agreements Kuwait had with Britain. These agreements meant Kuwait could not deal with other countries without Britain's permission. Even with these rules, many people in Kuwait still wanted to help. In July 1936, people secretly collected money to send to Palestine. Later that year, important merchant families in Kuwait formed a group to help. They held a public meeting to raise awareness and money. Ahmad Al-Sabah knew about this but could not stop it openly. He left town for a hunting trip during this time.
Towards the end of his time as ruler, he also served as the minister of finance. He held this role from 1940 to 1950.
