Little Green Creek is a small stream in Columbia County, Pennsylvania. It flows into Green Creek, which means Little Green Creek is a 'tributary' – a smaller stream that feeds into a larger one.

This creek is about 4.7 miles (7.6 km) long. It runs through Greenwood Township. The area of land that drains water into the creek, called its watershed, is about 5.01 square miles (13.0 km2). People have built at least two bridges over Little Green Creek.

Where Little Green Creek Flows

Little Green Creek starts in a valley in Greenwood Township. This is less than a mile south of Jackson Township. First, it flows east and gets water from a smaller stream.

Then, the creek slowly turns southeast. It flows next to a path called the Austin Trail. Over the next few miles, it turns south-southeast and then south. The valley around the creek becomes less deep here. The creek continues flowing south-southeast. It crosses Pennsylvania Route 254 and enters Rohrsburg. In Rohrsburg, it meets Green Creek.

Little Green Creek joins Green Creek about 4.16 miles (6.69 km) before Green Creek reaches its own end.

Land Around the Creek

The land near where Little Green Creek joins Green Creek is about 617 feet (188 m) above sea level. Where the creek begins, the land is higher, between 1,020 feet (310 m) and 1,040 feet (320 m) above sea level.

Part of the creek flows near a very steep hillside. This hillside is 400 feet (120 m) high and has many trees. It is on the northern edge of the Greenwood Valley. There is also a ridge (a long, narrow hill) to the west of the creek.

The area around Little Green Creek can sometimes experience large floods. It is one of the streams in Columbia County that has a 100-year floodplain. This means there is a 1% chance of a very big flood happening in any given year.

The watershed of Little Green Creek covers an area of 5.01 square miles (13.0 km2). Both the start and end points of the creek are in an area mapped by the United States Geological Survey called Benton. Experts believe that special plants or animals might live along the creek.

History of Little Green Creek

In the 1800s, there was a school district and a geographic district called the Little Green Creek District. This district was in northern Greenwood Township. It was named after Little Green Creek, which flowed through it.

A famous musician and composer named Otto Porter Ikeler grew up near the creek. His family's farm was on the Austin Trail.

Little Green Creek was officially added to the Geographic Names Information System on August 2, 1979. This system keeps track of names for places in the United States.

People have built bridges over Little Green Creek.

  • A steel stringer bridge was built in 1910 and fixed in 1991. It is 24.0 feet (7.3 m) long. This bridge is about 1.2 miles (1.9 km) northwest of Rohrsburg.
  • Another bridge, made of concrete, was built in 1918. It is 25.9 feet (7.9 m) long. This bridge is about 1.0 mile (1.6 km) northwest of Rohrsburg.

These bridges help roads T-599 and T-580 cross the creek.

The creek is called "Little Green Creek" because it is smaller than Green Creek. It flows into Green Creek.
