Where the River Flows
The Little Nottoway River begins where two smaller streams, Carys Creek and Mallorys Creek, join together. This spot is in a hilly area of Virginia called the Piedmont. The river flows mostly southeast. It eventually joins the Nottoway River. Several other small streams also flow into the Little Nottoway River.
About the Watershed
A watershed is an area of land where all the rain and snowmelt drain into a specific river or body of water. The Little Nottoway River's watershed is made up of about half forests and half open land. This mix of land types helps control how water flows into the river.
Streams Joining the River
Many smaller streams, called tributaries, flow into the Little Nottoway River. These streams add water to the main river as it travels. Here are some of the main ones:
- Horsepen Creek
- Jacks Branch
- Whetstone Creek - This is the second largest stream that flows into the Little Nottoway River.
- Long Branch
- Lazaretto Creek - Crystal Lake is a body of water formed on this creek.
- Mallorys Creek - This creek helps form the Little Nottoway River.
- Carys Creek - This is the largest stream that flows into the Little Nottoway River. It also helps form the river.
River Changes
There is one main lake in the Little Nottoway River watershed called Crystal Lake. It is located on Lazaretto Creek. The Little Nottoway River flows into the Nottoway River just before it reaches the Nottoway Reservoir.
