Exploring Little Sugar Creek

Where It Begins

The journey of Little Sugar Creek starts in the northeastern part of Benton County, Arkansas. Its very beginning, known as the headwaters, is found southeast of a town called Garfield (36°25′09″N 93°55′53″W / 36.41917°N 93.93139°W / 36.41917; -93.93139).

Its Path Through Arkansas and Missouri

From its source, the stream flows west. It goes under U.S. Route 62 near Brightwater. It also passes under Arkansas routes 94 and 72 south of Pea Ridge. The creek then turns northwest, flowing alongside U.S. Route 72 through the Bella Vista area.

Little Sugar Creek then crosses into Missouri near the community of Caverna. In Missouri, it continues to flow northwest, passing under Missouri Route 90.

Joining the Elk River

The stream flows past a community called Havenhurst. Finally, it meets Big Sugar Creek to form the Elk River. This meeting point, called a confluence, is just south of Pineville (36°35′18″N 94°22′58″W / 36.58833°N 94.38278°W / 36.58833; -94.38278).

A Surprising Fact About Its Size

Near Pineville, the amount of water flowing in Little Sugar Creek is about 224 cubic feet per second. This is a measurement of how much water passes by a certain point each second. Interestingly, Little Sugar Creek actually carries more water than the stream called "Big Sugar Creek." You can learn more about Big Sugar Creek and its flow by visiting the Big Sugar Creek page.
