History of Llanos Tuna
How Puerto Rico Became Part of the U.S.
Puerto Rico used to be controlled by Spain. After a war called the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This was part of an agreement known as the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Because of this, Puerto Rico became an unincorporated territory of the United States. This means it's a territory that belongs to the U.S. but isn't a state and doesn't have all the same rights as a state.
