A Look Back: Logandale's History
Logandale was first settled in 1865. It was built on the west side of the Muddy River. The original name for the settlement was St. Joseph.
Renaming and Relocation
In 1868, the settlers had to move the town. Their first town, Saint Joseph, Nevada, had burned down. So, they moved and called the new place New St. Joseph, or sometimes St. Joseph #2. The post office from the old town also moved here in 1867.
Abandonment and Revival
Like other settlements in the Moapa Valley, New St. Joseph was left empty in 1871. This happened because of a disagreement over taxes with the state of Nevada. The post office closed in October 1871. It reopened in May 1876, but then moved to Overton in 1883.
The town started to grow again in 1912. This was thanks to a new railroad station. It was first named Logan. Some people think it was named after a Civil War veteran, but this is not confirmed. Later, the name changed to Logandale. This was done because mail kept getting sent to Logan, Utah by mistake.
