Where is Lone Oak?
Lone Oak is located in the southeastern part of Hunt County. A main road, U.S. Route 69, goes right through the middle of the city.
If you travel northwest on this road, you'll reach Greenville in about 15 miles. Greenville is the main city of Hunt County, called the county seat. If you go southeast for about 13 miles, you'll arrive in Emory.
The city covers an area of about 1.11 square miles (2.85 square kilometers). All of this area is land. Lone Oak is also part of the area where water flows into the Sabine River.
A Look at Lone Oak's Past
People first started settling in the Lone Oak area in the 1850s. The city got its name from a single, lonely oak tree that stood out on the wide-open prairie.
A post office was opened in 1869, helping people send and receive mail. In 1890, train tracks for the Missouri, Kansas, and Texas Railroad were built through the area. Lone Oak officially became a city in that same year.
During the 1930s, the famous outlaws Bonnie and Clyde were known to have passed through Lone Oak, Texas, during their travels.
