Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Lono-a-Piʻilani was a powerful king, also known as a Moʻi, of the island of Maui in Hawaii. He was named after the Hawaiian god Lono.

Biography

Lono was the son of King Piʻilani. His grandfather was Kawaokaohele. He had a brother named Kiha-a-Piʻilani and a sister named Piʻikea. His sister Piʻikea was married to ʻUmi-a-Liloa, who was the king of Hawaiʻi Island.

Lono became king of Maui after his father, Piʻilani, passed away. However, his brother Kiha-a-Piʻilani had to leave Maui. He went to Hawaiʻi Island to stay with his sister Piʻikea and her husband, King ʻUmi. Piʻikea strongly encouraged her husband, King ʻUmi, to help her brother Kiha. She wanted King ʻUmi to help Kiha become the new king of Maui instead of Lono.

King ʻUmi agreed to help. He gathered his bravest warriors and the chiefs from different parts of Hawaiʻi Island. They prepared a large group to travel to Maui. King ʻUmi, his wife Piʻikea, and her brother Kiha led this expedition.

They crossed the ʻAlenuihāhā Channel between Maui and Hawaiʻi Island. Their fleet landed at Kapueokahi, which was the harbor of Hāna, Maui. Lono had been living in Hāna since his father's death.

Lono could not stop ʻUmi's forces from landing. So, he moved to a strong fort on top of a nearby hill called Kauwiki. This fort was thought to be very hard to capture. People also believed it was protected by a giant idol named Kawalakiʻi.

King ʻUmi's forces surrounded the Kauwiki fort. After some time and a few tries, they finally captured the fort. They destroyed the idol. Lono was defeated in the battle. After Lono's defeat, Kiha-a-Piʻilani was declared the new king of Maui. Once this was done, King ʻUmi and his forces returned to Hawaiʻi Island.

Family

Lono married a woman named Kealana-a-waʻauli. She was a great-granddaughter of Kahakuakane, who was a ruler of Kauai. Lono and Kealana-a-waʻauli had a daughter named Kaʻakaupea. Kaʻakaupea later married her uncle, Nihokela. They had a daughter named Piʻilaniwahine, who married Kamalalawalu.

Lono also had another daughter named Moihala. From Moihala's family line came Kapuleiolaa, who was one of the wives of Kanaloauoʻo. Kapuleiolaa was also an ancestor of Sarai Hiwauli, who was the wife of John Papa ʻĪʻī.
