History of Lora de Estepa
Ancient Times in Lora de Estepa
The area around Lora de Estepa has been home to people for a very long time. Humans lived here even during the Paleolithic period, which was the Old Stone Age.
Later, during the Copper Age, people used local caves as places to bury their dead. After that, groups like the Tartessos and Iberian cultures settled in this region.
Roman Era and the Town of Olaurum
The Roman Empire eventually took over and settled this area. Some historians think Lora de Estepa might have been an ancient Roman town called "Lauro." This town is mentioned in old Roman writings.
If this is true, then Lora de Estepa was the site of an important battle in 45 BC. This battle was part of Caesar's Civil War. During this fight, the forces of Julius Caesar trapped and defeated Gnaeus Pompeius the Younger. He was the son of Caesar's rival, Pompey.
However, whether Lauro is actually Lora de Estepa is still a guess. Many historians disagree about it. What we do know is that by the 1st century, the Roman town here was called "Olaurum." It was an important center for communication and trade in the region.
Later, between the 4th and 7th centuries, Olaurum became less important. Many people moved out of the town and into smaller farming communities nearby. These were often built around large Roman country homes called villae.
Medieval Period and Muslim Rule
After the Muslims conquered Spain, the local settlement became known as "Al-auriat." We don't know much about the town's history during the time of Muslim rule. The whole region was not very populated back then.
The Christians reclaimed the town in 1250. It was given to the Order of Santiago, a military-religious group. But the area remained a battleground for many years. It wasn't until the Christians conquered Antequera in 1410 that the region became more peaceful.
After this, more people started to live in the area again. By the 16th century, the town was known by new names like "Lorilla" or "Lora Menor."
