Lorenzo Tiepolo was an important leader of Venice, known as the Doge. He led the Republic of Venice from 1268 until he passed away on August 15, 1275.
Becoming a Leader
Lorenzo Tiepolo was born in Venice, a famous city in Italy. His father, Jacopo Tiepolo, was also a Doge of Venice. A Doge was the chief magistrate and leader of the Republic of Venice for many centuries.
Lorenzo was a skilled military leader. During a conflict called the War of Saint Sabas, he led Venice to victory against Genoa at the Battle of Acre in 1258. He also served as a podestà (a type of mayor or chief magistrate) in the city of Fano.
In 1262, he helped negotiate peace between Venice and Prince William of Villehardouin. This was after a conflict known as the War of the Euboeote Succession.
Doge of Venice
In 1268, after the death of the previous Doge, Reniero Zeno, Lorenzo Tiepolo was chosen as the new Doge. He was elected on July 23, 1268, with 25 out of 41 votes. People generally liked him. However, some noble families in Venice were not happy because they felt he favored his own sons too much. This is called nepotism. To prevent this, a new position called Cancellier Grande (Great Chancellor) was created.
Peace and Conflicts
In 1270, a peace agreement was signed with Genoa in a city called Cremona. This agreement confirmed that Venice was the most powerful city in the Adriatic Sea. However, in the same year, Venice faced another war. This time, it was against a group of Italian cities, including Bologna, Treviso, Verona, Mantua, Ferrara, Cremona, Recanati, and Ancona. This war started because of disagreements over trade. After a difficult start in 1271, Venice managed to win the war, and the peace terms were good for Venice.
Marco Polo's Journey
During Lorenzo Tiepolo's time as Doge, a famous explorer named Marco Polo began his journey to China. This was in 1273. Marco Polo would not return to Venice until 1295, many years later.
Lorenzo Tiepolo passed away in Venice in 1275. He was buried with his father in the Dominican church of San Zanipolo.
Family Life
Lorenzo Tiepolo was married twice. His first wife's background is not entirely clear, but she was likely from a royal or noble family. Before 1262, he married his second wife, Marchesina Ghisi. She was the daughter of a man named Geremia Ghisi.
Lorenzo and Marchesina had two sons together, named Giacomo and Pietro.
