Early Life and Beginnings
Loris Karius was born in Biberach, Germany. His parents are Christine and Harald Karius. While his dad wanted him to be a motocross rider, Loris's grandfather, Karl, encouraged him to play football.
Loris went to school at Pestalozzi-Gymnasium Biberach. When he moved to England in 2009, he continued his studies with a private tutor.
Club Career Highlights
Starting Out in Germany and England
Karius played for local teams like SG Mettenberg and SSV Ulm 1846 before joining VfB Stuttgart. He quickly moved up through their youth teams. In September 2008, he played for Germany's under-16 national team.
Manchester City noticed Karius during a game and invited him and his family to England. He officially joined Manchester City on July 1, 2009. He played for their under-18 and under-21 teams but did not play any senior games for them.
Time at Mainz 05

In August 2011, Karius was loaned to Mainz 05. He played for their reserve team, Mainz 05 II. On January 11, 2012, his move to Mainz 05 became permanent.
He made his first team debut for Mainz 05 on December 1, 2012, in a Bundesliga match. He was only 19 years old, making him the youngest goalkeeper to play for Mainz in the Bundesliga. By the 2013–14 season, he became the team's main goalkeeper. In the 2015–16 season, he played every game and kept nine clean sheets (meaning the other team didn't score). Other Bundesliga players voted him the second-best goalkeeper in the league, right after Manuel Neuer.
Moving to Liverpool

On May 24, 2016, Karius signed a five-year deal with Liverpool for about £4.75 million. He was given the number 1 jersey.
He played his first game for Liverpool on September 20, 2016, in a League Cup match. His first Premier League game was on September 24, where Liverpool won 5–1. On October 17, he kept his first Premier League clean sheet against Manchester United. Liverpool's manager, Jürgen Klopp, said Karius was their first-choice goalkeeper. However, after a few tough games in December, Karius was taken out of the starting lineup to help him recover.
The 2018 Champions League Final
In the 2018 UEFA Champions League final, Karius started as goalkeeper for Liverpool against Real Madrid. Liverpool lost the match 3–1. After the game, Karius was very upset and apologized to the fans.
A few days later, doctors found that Karius had suffered a concussion during the match. This injury might have affected his performance. His manager, Jürgen Klopp, later confirmed that the concussion "100% influenced" Karius's play.
Loan Spells Away from Liverpool
In July 2018, Liverpool signed another goalkeeper, Alisson, which meant Karius would likely be a backup. On August 25, 2018, Karius went on a two-year loan to the Turkish club Beşiktaş. He played many games for them. In March 2019, he had some issues with unpaid wages from the club. He ended his contract with Beşiktaş in May 2020 because of these problems.
On September 28, 2020, Karius was loaned to the German team Union Berlin for the 2020–21 season. He made his debut for them in December 2020. He returned to Liverpool in July 2021 but did not play any more official games for the club. His contract ended in June 2022, and he left Liverpool.
Playing for Newcastle United
On September 12, 2022, Karius signed with Newcastle United. His first contract was until January 2023, but it was later extended.
On February 26, 2023, Karius made his debut for Newcastle in the 2023 EFL Cup final. This was his first game for an English club since the 2018 Champions League final. He played because Newcastle's main goalkeeper, Nick Pope, had a red card, and the backup, Martin Dúbravka, couldn't play. Even though Newcastle lost 2–0 to Manchester United, Karius was praised for making eight saves during the match. He signed another one-year extension with Newcastle in July 2023.
On February 24, 2024, Karius played his first Premier League game in six seasons against Arsenal. He wasn't expected to play, but both other goalkeepers were unavailable. Newcastle lost 4–1. Karius left Newcastle on July 1, 2024, when his contract ended.
Joining Schalke 04
On January 14, 2025, Karius joined Schalke 04 as a free agent. He signed a contract until the end of the season.
International Career
Loris Karius played for Germany at various youth levels, from under-16 up. However, he faced strong competition from other talented goalkeepers, which limited his appearances.
Personal Life
Since 2022, Karius has been in a relationship with Italian television presenter and model Diletta Leotta. In March 2023, they shared the happy news that they were expecting their first child. They got engaged later that year. Their daughter, Aria, was born on August 16, 2023. The couple got married on June 22, 2024, in a private ceremony on the island of Vulcano, Sicily, in Italy.
