The Lorne sausage is a special kind of sausage from Scotland. People also call it square sausage or slice because of its shape. Unlike most sausages, it doesn't have a skin around it. It's often served in square slices and is a popular part of a traditional Scottish breakfast.

Where Did the Name Come From?

Many people think the Lorne sausage is named after the Lorne area in Argyll, Scotland. Old newspaper ads show the name 'Lorne Sausage' was used as early as 1896. This was long before a famous comedian named Tommy Lorne became well-known. So, the sausage was named before the comedian.

A Bit of History

The exact beginnings of the Lorne sausage are not fully clear. It is a very common food in the Scottish version of the full breakfast. You can also find it in a breakfast roll, which is like a breakfast sandwich. The square shape of the sausage makes it perfect for putting between two halves of a slice of plain bread.

How It's Made

To make Lorne sausage, people mix pork and beef that has been minced. They add rusk (a type of breadcrumb) and spices to the meat. This mixture is then pressed tightly into a rectangular tin. The tin is usually about 10 centimeters (about 4 inches) wide and tall.

After the mixture is packed, it's sliced into pieces about 1 centimeter (less than half an inch) thick. Since there's no casing, the meat must be packed very tightly to keep its shape. Sometimes, the slices might not be perfectly square, but they are always delicious!
