Los Patos, also called Tres Quebradas, is a tall mountain in the Andes mountain range. The Andes are a huge mountain range in South America. This peak sits right on the border between Catamarca Province in Argentina and the Atacama Region in Chile. It is 6,239 meters (20,469 feet) high.
About Los Patos Mountain
Los Patos is not just a mountain; it is also a volcano. Scientists have studied rocks from the mountain. They found that the volcano is very old. Some parts are about 4.5 million years old. Other parts are even older, around 7.6 million years old.
Where is Los Patos Located?
Los Patos is part of a group of mountains called the Cordillera Sundt. This mountain chain has many stratovolcanoes. These are cone-shaped volcanoes made of many layers of hardened lava. The chain also has lava domes and lava flows.
What is Los Patos Made Of?
The rocks that make up Los Patos are mostly dacite. This is a type of volcanic rock. There are also smaller amounts of andesite. Other volcanoes in this same chain include Falso Azufre, Monte Pissis, and Mulas Muertas. Scientists have also found special lavas on Los Patos. These lavas are called "Pircas Negras" and have unique minerals inside them.
