He went to Hamtramck High School. After graduating, he attended the University of Michigan, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1943. In 1951, he received his law degree (Juris Doctor) from the University of Michigan Law School. He became a licensed lawyer in Michigan in January 1952. He also studied at the National War College and Naval War College.

A Career in Public Service
Before joining Congress, Nedzi worked as the public administrator for Wayne County, Michigan. He held this position from 1955 to 1961.
Working in Congress
Nedzi was first elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1961. This was a special election to fill a spot left open by another representative. He represented Michigan's 1st congressional district.
He was re-elected in 1962. Two years later, he was elected to represent the 14th district. He continued to be re-elected every two years until 1980, when he decided not to run again. In total, he served in Congress from November 7, 1961, to January 3, 1981. Nedzi supported the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which helped end discrimination.
In February 1975, Nedzi became the chairman of the House Select Committee on Intelligence. This committee was created to oversee the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) after some concerns about its activities. Nedzi resigned from this role in June 1975. His resignation happened after reports suggested he knew about certain CIA actions but did not fully inform Congress. The committee's work was then continued by another group called the Pike Committee.
