A Look Back: Church History
Luther Memorial Church started in 1905. It began as a ministry for students at the University of Wisconsin. In 1907, the group officially formed Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. This was the first Lutheran church in Madison to offer all its services in English.
Early Buildings and Name Change
At first, the church rented space in the Gates of Heaven Synagogue for its weekly worship. In 1915, the church built a small chapel. It was designed by the same architects, Claude & Starck. This chapel could seat 300 people. The church planned for it to become a Sunday school building later. Worship services then moved to this new chapel.
In 1918, the congregation changed its name. It became Luther Memorial Evangelical Lutheran Church.
Building the Main Church
In 1920, the church asked Claude & Starck to design a much larger building. They wanted it to look like grand European cathedrals. The architects created a Neogothic-style building. It has a tall, upward-pointing design, like older Gothic churches.
The front of the building is 100 feet tall. It has tall columns and buttresses (supports) next to the main entrance. Above the entrance is a large stained glass window. A stone cross sits at the very top. The walls are made of buff-colored limestone.
Inside, the main area, called the nave, is 150 feet long. It was designed to seat 1650 people. The beautiful stained glass windows were made by the Gaytee Stained Glass Company. The roof is supported by steel beams. These beams are covered and painted to look like wood. The pulpit, lectern, and original baptismal font are carved from limestone.
Construction of this large church began in May 1921. The new church was officially opened on October 28, 1923. Later, an education building was added in 1957-59. The church has also shared its space with many musical groups from the University of Wisconsin.
In 2011, the main church building was named a Madison Landmark. Then, in 2018, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Worship Services
Luther Memorial's worship services follow a traditional style. They include Holy Communion every Sunday and on other special days. A morning prayer service is also held online each weekday. Services often feature hymns and classical music.
Music Programs
Music is a very important part of Luther Memorial Church. Andrew Schaeffer has been the director of music since 2018. The church uses three different pipe organs for worship.
The church also hosts many concerts. For example, UW-Madison's choirs perform their winter concerts here. Famous choirs like the St. Thomas Choir of Leipzig from Germany have also performed at the church. Choirs from Luther College and St. Olaf College often perform in the church's nave too.
Musical Groups at the Church
Many musical groups perform regularly throughout the year:
- Adult choir (about 50 members) sings sacred music on Sunday mornings. They perform songs from old chants to new compositions. They sing in English, Latin, and sometimes German or Russian.
- Chant choir performs a monthly evening service called compline. They sing in English and Latin.
- Training choir for ages K-2.
- Children's choir for ages 3–6.
- Youth choir for ages 7–12.
- Recorder ensemble is open to all ages.
- Bell choir plays music using 5-octave and 2-octave sets of Malmark bells.
Helping the Community
Luther Memorial Church is committed to helping people in need. Here are some examples of their social ministry programs:
The Road Home (Interfaith Hospitality Network)
The church started helping the Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN) in 1999. IHN, now called The Road Home, is an organization in Madison. It helps provide housing for people experiencing homelessness. Churches take turns hosting families. Luther Memorial was a host church until early 2018.
Habitat for Humanity
Luther Memorial was the first church to partner with Habitat for Humanity of Dane County, Wisconsin. In 1993, the church raised money and provided volunteers. They helped build a house for a family in need.
Campus Ministry
The church is located right next to the University of Wisconsin campus. Because of this, many students are involved in church life. Luther Memorial is also a partner church with the Lutheran Campus Center (LCC). The LCC is located next door. The LCC holds worship services at the church, and its pastor often preaches at Luther Memorial.
