Lynton is a small town located on the coast of Exmoor in Devon, England. It's about 17 miles (27 km) north-east of Barnstaple. Lynton is very close to where the West Lyn and East Lyn rivers meet. It sits high above its nearby village, Lynmouth. A deep, steep valley separates Lynton and Lynmouth.

How Lynton is Governed
Lynton is part of an area called the Lynton and Lynmouth electoral ward. In 2011, about 1,647 people lived in this ward. The local decisions for both Lynton and Lynmouth are made by the Lynton and Lynmouth Town Council.
Exploring Lynton's Location
Lynton and Lynmouth are connected by a special railway called the Lynton and Lynmouth Cliff Railway. This railway helps people travel between the two places because the hill separating them is very steep.
Many walking trails pass through or near Lynton. These include the South West Coast Path and the Tarka Trail. The Two Moors Way starts in Ivybridge and ends in Lynmouth. Other trails like the Samaritans Way South West and the Coleridge Way also connect to the area.
Just half a mile (0.8 km) to the west of Lynton, you can find the beautiful Valley of Rocks and Wringcliff Bay.
A Look at Lynton's History and Buildings
People lived in this area a very long time ago. There is proof of Iron Age activity at a nearby place called Roborough Castle.
Lynton's main church, St Mary's Parish Church, looks out over the sea. It is surrounded by shops and hotels. The church tower was built in the 13th century. The church itself has been made bigger and changed over time, especially in 1741 and during the late Victorian and early Edwardian periods.
Many of the buildings you see in Lynton today were built in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The Lynton Town Hall was a gift to the town from Sir George Newnes. He was a very generous person who helped the town a lot. The Town Hall opened on August 15, 1900. Sir George Newnes also gave the town the United Reformed Church building.

Lynton and Lynmouth have a special friendship with a town in France called Bénouville. This is known as town twinning.
Getting Around Lynton
In the past, Lynton was the end point for a small railway called the Lynton and Barnstaple Railway. This railway served both Lynton and Lynmouth.
As of September 2020, you can travel to Lynton by bus. The 309/310 bus services connect Lynton and Lynmouth to Barnstaple.
Sports in Lynton
The Lynton & Lynmouth Cricket Club was started in August 1876. They play their games at the Valley of Rocks.
