The MAPS Air Museum is an exciting aviation museum located in Green, Ohio. It's a place where you can explore many different types of aircraft! The museum is run by a group called the Military Aviation Preservation Society. You can find it right next to the Akron-Canton Regional Airport.
This museum is home to more than 50 amazing aircraft. Many of these planes are on loan from the U.S. Air Force and Navy. They are often being restored to look like new! The museum also has two special aircraft that came from the Goodyear company. You can see these planes inside a large former U.S. Air National Guard hangar. There are also planes displayed outside on a paved area called a tarmac.
The museum also has a collection of rare items. One cool artifact is the gondola from the "Spirit of Akron." This is the part where people would sit and control a Goodyear blimp.
The museum's Gallery of Heroes room is filled with detailed models and items from different wars. You can learn about important events like Pearl Harbor. There are also displays about the brave The Tuskegee Airmen and Rosie the Riveter. Many items are on loan from people in the community who served in wars.
The museum has a special library called the Louise Timken Aviation Library. It keeps important records and collects images, books, and stories about military history. This library is open to everyone who visits the museum. If you become a museum member, you can even check out books!
History of the Museum
The MAPS Air Museum started in 1990. It worked with a collector named David Tallichet and his group, the Military Aircraft Restoration Corporation. In 1995, the museum officially opened its doors to the public. It was first located in a National Guard building near the airport.
In 2000, the museum held its very first air show. This was a big event where people could watch planes fly! In 2001, the museum moved to a new, larger home. It moved into a hangar that used to belong to Chautauqua Airlines.
In 2020, the museum finished renovating the second floor of its hangar. This new space includes rooms that can be rented for events. There's a conference room, a large banquet hall, and even a full kitchen.
Cool Exhibits to See
Outside the main hangar, there's a special tent called the "Medic's Corner." This exhibit shows a collection of medical equipment used during the Vietnam War. It helps visitors understand what it was like for medics during that time.
