The Macatawa River, also called the Black River, is a waterway in Ottawa County, Michigan. It flows into Lake Macatawa, which then connects to the much larger Lake Michigan. The main part of the river is about 16.8 miles (27.0 km) long.

What's in a Name?

The name Macatawa comes from a Native American phrase, "Muck-i-ta-wog-go-me." This phrase means "black water." Before European settlers arrived, tribes like the Ottawas, Chippewas, and Potawatomies lived in this area.
