Malcolm Jamaal Davis (born April 12, 1992), known as MadeinTYO (which sounds like "Made in Tokyo"), is an American rapper, singer, and songwriter. He is famous for his 2016 song "Uber Everywhere." This song reached number 51 on the Billboard Hot 100 music chart. A special remixed version of the song featured the rapper Travis Scott. "Uber Everywhere" was the first song from his first mixtape, You Are Forgiven, released in 2016. His first studio album, Sincerely, Tokyo (2018), also made it onto the Billboard 200 chart.
Early Life
Malcolm Jamaal Davis was born on April 12, 1992, in Honolulu, Hawaii. Because his family was in the military, he moved around a lot. He lived in places like Hawaii, California, and Texas. He also spent time in New York and Virginia.
He spent his teenage years living in Tokyo, Japan. This time in Tokyo later inspired his stage name, MadeinTYO. He started writing music after seeing his cousin make beats in Washington, D.C.. After his time in Tokyo, Davis moved to Atlanta with his older brother, 24hrs.
Music Career
MadeinTYO released his first song, "Uber Everywhere," on February 26, 2016. The song quickly became very popular. It reached number 51 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. A remix of the song featured famous rapper Travis Scott. "Uber Everywhere" was so successful that it was certified double platinum. This means it sold over two million copies.
His other songs, "I Want" (with 2 Chainz) and "Skateboard P," also did very well. "I Want" was certified gold, and "Skateboard P" went platinum. A remix of "Skateboard P" with rapper Big Sean came out in November 2016.
In April 2016, MadeinTYO released his first mixtape, You Are Forgiven. It was officially available for purchase in August 2016. This mixtape reached number 122 on the Billboard 200 chart. In 2016, Spotify, a popular music streaming service, named MadeinTYO one of the top five most streamed new artists. He also released two smaller music collections, called EPs. These were 24Hrs in Tokyo (with his brother, 24hrs) in 2016 and True's World in 2017.
In 2017, MadeinTYO was chosen for the XXL Freshman Class list. This list highlights new and upcoming hip hop artists each year. Other artists on the list that year included A Boogie wit da Hoodie and Playboi Carti.
On June 1, 2018, MadeinTYO released a new song called "Ned Flanders." This song featured rapper ASAP Ferg. "Ned Flanders" was the first song from his first full studio album, Sincerely, Tokyo. This album was released on October 26, 2018.
He released his second studio album, Never Forgotten, on October 30, 2020. This album included songs with artists like J Balvin and Ty Dolla Sign. In 2021, MadeinTYO worked with UnoTheActivist on a collaborative album called Yokohama. He also released the single "HUNNIDDOLLA" in February 2021. This song has been streamed over 82 million times on Spotify.
In 2023, he released his third studio album, NEO TYO. This album has 12 songs and features artists like Famous Dex. In 2024, he released another album called TYO 808, which has 18 songs.
