Madison Guadalupe Hammond (born November 15, 1997) is an American professional soccer player. She plays as a defensive midfielder for Angel City FC in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL).

Early Life and Soccer Beginnings
Madison Hammond was born in Phoenix, Arizona. She grew up in the San Felipe Pueblo area, which is a Native American community north of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Her mother, Carol Lincoln, is from the Navajo and San Felipe Pueblo tribes. Madison's father is Black. Her Native American name is Shrewaka.
Madison started playing soccer in Albuquerque when she was five years old. She was the only girl on a boys' team. She spent time on the San Felipe Pueblo reservation, where she is part of the tribe's fox clan.
When Madison was nine, her mother, who was in the military, moved them to Washington, D.C.. They settled in Virginia. Madison joined a girls' soccer club called Prince William Soccer. She also played varsity volleyball at Hayfield Secondary School in Alexandria, Virginia. Later, she joined McLean Youth Soccer, a top youth club. Before college, Madison played as an attacking midfielder but then switched to playing defense.
College Soccer Career
Madison played soccer for four years at Wake Forest University. She was a team captain for two of those years. In her final year, she received an award called second-team All-ACC. This award recognized her strong performance in the Atlantic Coast Conference. She also earned academic honors every year, showing she was a great student.
Madison was a member of the National Honor Society. She also joined honor societies for Spanish, science, and history. Outside of soccer, Madison plays the violin and was part of the Wake Forest orchestra. She finished her college studies early to get ready for the 2020 NWSL College Draft.
Professional Club Career
Madison Hammond signed up for the 2020 NWSL College Draft. However, she was not chosen by any team during the draft. While the draft was happening, she was trying out for clubs in Seville and Madrid, Spain.
Playing for OL Reign (2020–2021)
After the draft, OL Reign, an NWSL team, invited Madison to their preseason training camp. But training was stopped in March 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Madison went home. She later rejoined OL Reign at a new camp in Missoula, Montana. She was invited as a non-roster player for the 2020 NWSL Challenge Cup. Three weeks later, she signed her first professional contract with the team.
Madison made her NWSL debut on September 26, 2020. This was a special moment because it made her the first Native American player to play in the NWSL. She has both Navajo and Pueblo heritage. When she found out about this milestone in an interview, she was surprised and asked for it to be confirmed.
Playing for Angel City FC (2022–Present)
On March 11, 2022, OL Reign traded Madison to Angel City FC. In return, OL Reign received a draft pick and some money. Madison played in nine games for Angel City FC in 2022, starting three of them. On August 27, 2023, Madison scored her first NWSL goal. It was the winning goal against her former team, OL Reign.
How Madison Plays Soccer
Madison Hammond is a very flexible defender. She can play in all positions on the backline (defense) and also as a defensive midfielder. Her teammates, coaches, and soccer experts often praise her for being calm and composed when she plays defense.
In a game on May 7, 2023, against Kansas City Current, Madison played as a defensive midfielder. She had to guard two top attackers, Debinha and Lo'eau LaBonta. Madison did a great job marking both players. She also helped set up Angel City's winning goal in that match. Madison can pass the ball well with both her left and right feet.
Work Outside of Soccer
Madison Hammond has also worked with Nike Inc.. She helped design a special sneaker called the Kyrie Low 4. This shoe is named after basketball player Kyrie Irving, who has Standing Rock Sioux heritage.
Madison attended the 2022 ESPY Awards, which celebrate sports achievements. She was the first Afro-Indigenous athlete to walk the red carpet at this event.
Personal Life and Advocacy
Because Madison is both Native American and African American, she is very active in supporting both communities. She works for social justice. She is a member of the Black Women's Players Collective, which supports Black women in soccer. She also works with Athlete Ally, an organization that promotes inclusion in sports. Madison is part of the Nike N7 Fund, which helps Native American communities.
Madison also speaks up for women and girls in soccer. She believes they should get the same benefits as men and boys. This includes making soccer academies less expensive and paying professional women players more. She also talked with fellow NWSL player McCall Zerboni about a phrase used in an interview that was disrespectful to Native Americans.
Madison's sister, Michaela, played volleyball for New York University. Madison's uncle, Notah Begay III, is a professional golfer who played with Tiger Woods. He has been a big inspiration for her in sports.
Madison goes back to the San Felipe Pueblo every year for their feast day on May 1.
