Madison Guadalupe Hammond (born November 15, 1997) is an American professional soccer player. She plays as a defensive midfielder for Angel City FC. This team is part of the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL).

Growing Up and Early Life
Madison Hammond was born in Phoenix, Arizona. She grew up in the San Felipe Pueblo area, near Albuquerque, New Mexico. Her mother, Carol Lincoln, is from the Navajo and San Felipe Pueblo tribes. Madison's father is Black. Her Pueblo name is Shrewaka, which means "fox" in the Keres language.
Madison started playing soccer at age five in Albuquerque. She was the only girl on a boys' team. She spent part of her childhood on the San Felipe Pueblo reservation. She is a member of the tribe's fox clan.
When Madison was nine, her mother, who was in the military, moved them to Washington, D.C.. They then moved to Virginia. Madison joined a girls' soccer club called Prince William Soccer. She also played varsity volleyball at Hayfield Secondary School. Later, she joined a youth club called McLean Youth Soccer. Before college, Madison played as an attacking midfielder. She later changed to playing defense.
College Soccer Journey
Madison played soccer for four years at Wake Forest University. She was a team captain for two of those years. In her final year, she was named second-team All-ACC. This means she was one of the best players in her college league. She also earned academic honors every year. Madison was part of the National Honor Society. She was also in honor societies for Spanish, science, and history.
Besides soccer, Madison plays the violin. She was a member of the Wake Forest orchestra. She finished her college studies early. This helped her get ready for the 2020 NWSL College Draft, where professional teams pick new players.
Professional Soccer Career
Madison signed up for the 2020 NWSL College Draft. However, no team chose her at that time. She then went to tryouts for soccer clubs in Seville and Madrid, Spain.
Starting with OL Reign
After the draft, the OL Reign team from the NWSL invited Madison to their training camp. But training was stopped in March 2020 because of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on sports. Madison went home.
She rejoined the Reign at a new camp in Missoula, Montana. This was before the 2020 NWSL Challenge Cup. Three weeks later, she signed her first professional contract with the team. Madison made her NWSL debut on September 26, 2020.
This was a big moment. Madison became the first Native American player to play in the NWSL. She is both Navajo and Pueblo. When she heard this news in an interview, she was surprised and asked for it to be confirmed.
Joining Angel City FC
On March 11, 2022, OL Reign traded Madison to Angel City FC. Angel City gave OL Reign a pick in the 2023 NWSL Draft and some money. In 2022, Madison played in nine games for Angel City. She started three of those games.
On August 27, 2023, Madison scored her first NWSL goal. It was the winning goal against her old team, OL Reign.
How She Plays
Madison Hammond is a very flexible defender. She can play in all defense positions. She can also play as a defensive midfielder. Her teammates, coaches, and sports experts often say she is calm and steady when she plays defense.
In a game on May 7, 2023, Madison played defensive midfield. She filled in for another player, Julie Ertz. She played against top attackers like Debinha and Lo'eau LaBonta. Madison did a great job marking (guarding) both players. She also helped set up Angel City's winning goal in that game.
Madison can also pass the ball well with both her left and right feet. This is called being ambidextrous.
Beyond the Field
Madison does more than just play soccer. She designed a special sneaker for Nike Inc. It was the Kyrie Low 4 shoe. The shoe is named after basketball player Kyrie Irving, who has Standing Rock Sioux heritage.
Madison also walked the red carpet at the 2022 ESPY Awards. She was the first Afro-Indigenous athlete to attend this big sports event.
Personal Life and Advocacy
Madison is both Native American and African American. She is very active in working for social justice. She supports both communities. She has done this since her time at Wake Forest and as a professional player.
She is a member of the Black Women's Players Collective. She also works with Athlete Ally and the Nike N7 Fund. This fund helps Native American communities. Madison also speaks up for women and girls in soccer. She wants them to have the same opportunities as men and boys. This includes cheaper access to soccer academies and better pay for professional players.
Madison's sister, Michaela, played volleyball for New York University. Her uncle, Notah Begay III, is a professional golfer. He played with Tiger Woods and was a big inspiration for Madison.
Madison goes back to San Felipe Pueblo every year for its feast day on May 1.
