Magical Pokémon Journey, known in Japan as Pocket Monsters PiPiPi ★ Adventures, is a fun manga series about the world of Pokémon. It was created by Yumi Tsukirino and published by Shogakukan in the magazine Ciao. The story is collected into ten books called tankōbon.
This manga is special because it's not based on any of the Pokémon video games. It was also the first shōjo Pokémon manga released in the United States. Shōjo manga are stories made especially for young girls. The Japanese title "PiPiPi" comes from the names of three popular Pokémon: Purin (Jigglypuff), Pippi (Clefairy), and Pikachu.
The main character is a cheerful girl named Hazel (Maron in Japan). She wants to catch Pokémon because a scientist, who everyone calls Grandpa, promises to make a special potion for her if she does. Hazel hopes this potion will help her friend Almond like her back. Many of the Pokémon in this manga can talk like humans, which makes for some interesting adventures!
Magical Pokémon Journey was released in English in North America by Viz Media and in Singapore by Chuang Yi. Viz Media published seven of the ten books, changing them to be read from left-to-right, just like most English books.
There's also a spin-off series called Pocket Monsters Chamo-Chamo ★ Pretty ♪. This series follows the adventures of Clefairy, Pikachu, Torchic, and Mightyena. The "chamo-chamo" part of the title comes from "Achamo," which is Torchic's Japanese name.

Meet the Characters
This manga is full of interesting people and Pokémon!
Human Friends
- Hazel: She is the main character, an energetic and cheerful blonde girl. Hazel is very fond of her friend Almond and loves cute Pokémon like Pikachu and Clefairy. When she was younger, she enjoyed playing pranks on Almond. Now, she's still very lively, but in a more girly way.
- Almond: He is the boy Hazel likes. Almond calls himself a Pokémon trainer, but we don't see him with many Pokémon, except for Squirtle, who is more of a friend than a trained partner. Almond doesn't show much interest in Hazel or Coconut until the very last book.
- Coconut: She is Grandpa's granddaughter and Hazel's friendly rival for Almond's attention. Coconut is a very smart inventor. She often tries to make special mixtures, but they sometimes go wrong, and her Eevee often gets caught up in her experiments! Later, a boy named Caraway likes Coconut, but she isn't interested in him romantically.
- Grandpa: He isn't Hazel's actual grandfather, as she often reminds Almond. He's just a funny old man everyone calls "Grandpa." He is married to Ginger. Grandpa made Hazel's special outfit, which has powers to protect her from harm and even help her in water. He used to run a company called POG Inc., but he left because he found running a business boring. Ginger now runs it.
- Peanut: A boy who moved to Hazel's town because he wasn't feeling well. His Pokémon partner is a hotheaded Charmander. Peanut has a strange energy around him that he can connect with and control.
- Pistachio: Peanut's brother, who works as a florist and likes Hazel. His Bulbasaur, named Danerina, has a crush on him, and so does Chiko the Chikorita.
- Walnut: He is a ninja-in-training under the great ninja master Ditto. Walnut can be a bit clumsy. When he's not training, he helps out at his family's bakery. Walnut wears glasses when he's not training and contact lenses when he's in his ninja uniform.
- Sandy: A ghost who is 150 years old. When she first appeared, Raichu was upset with her. Raichu was left by the ocean because he would accidentally shock people, and Sandy had promised to meet him there. However, before they could meet, they were both caught in a big wave. Once Sandy explained this, Raichu forgave her, and they found peace. They appear in later chapters to help a grumpy Golduck ghost and are reborn in the final book.
- Apricot: She first appears in the eighth book. Apricot is also a ninja-in-training, and she's much better at it than Walnut. Her master, Azumarill, is even more skilled than Ditto. Azumarill's daughter, a Marill named Marimaru, is Koume's partner. Apricot really loves bread and ends up liking Walnut.
- Plum: She first appears in the ninth book. Plum is a nurse who travels with her senior, a Chansey, helping people get rid of bad feelings or energy. She discovers why Peanut isn't feeling well, but she can't completely fix it. She likes Peanut.
- Caraway: He first appears in the tenth and final book. As soon as he meets Coconut, he likes her a lot. Coconut isn't interested at first, but she becomes friends with Caraway after he helps her with an experiment.
- Ginger: She first appears in the seventh book and is Grandpa's wife! She came to challenge him: he had to win the best inventions prize at an upcoming contest or move back home. She has a Natu and a Girafarig. Ginger is currently running POG Inc.!
- Haruka: A character from the spin-off series who gets her first Pokémon, Torchic. She is very similar to May from the Pokémon anime series, but with different clothes.
Pokémon Friends
- Pikachu: The first Pokémon to appear in this series. Pikachu is Hazel's best friend, and they are both a bit silly sometimes. Pikachu is one of the few Pokémon in this manga who cannot speak human language.
- Clefairy: Hazel's second Pokémon friend, who gets scared easily. He doesn't like battling because he thinks he's weak, even though his Metronome move is quite strong. He also uses Minimize often, especially when he gets frightened.
- Jigglypuff: A Pokémon who is a bit of a princess and whose family lives in a castle. Jigglypuff loves to cook, but her food doesn't always taste as good as it looks. She gets very upset when no one wants to eat what she makes.
- Squirtle: The only boy Pokémon living at the Jigglypuff mansion. He calls Almond his "big brother" and is very close to him.
- Eevee (Coconut's): Coconut's Pokémon and lab assistant. He often has bad luck and gets caught up when her experiments go wrong. In the sixth book, he meets and likes...
- Eevee (female): At first, she liked Eevee from a distance, but she managed to tell him how she felt with help from Hazel and Coconut. Later, she has to move away, but she visits Eevee sometimes.
- Charmander: Peanut's companion. His fiery temper is very different from Peanut's quiet personality. Charmander gets angry when things don't go his way, which happens often. In later books, he seems to like Chiko.
- Danerina: Pistachio's Bulbasaur. She can be a bit protective and gets upset if Pistachio talks to other women.
- Ditto (ninja master): Wal's ninja teacher. He's a very skilled ninja, even though he's just a pink, shapeshifting Pokémon.
- Marimaru: This Marill is Koume's ninja partner. Both of them train under Marimaru's mother, Azumarill.
- Roko and Arashi: Two of Caraway's Pokémon. Roko the Vulpix (Rokon in Japanese) likes Arashi the Cyndaquil (Hinoarashi in Japanese), even though he's a bit silly. They meet Coconut while looking for a Fire Stone.
- Chansey: Plum's senior, a nurse who helps people feel better. She uses her special egg powers with Plum's cross to help people troubled by bad energy.
- Raichu: Sandy's Pokémon, who was left by the shore.
- Chiko: A Chikorita who appears to challenge Danerina the Bulbasaur for Pistachio's attention. They have a contest to see who is better for him, and Chiko wins. However, Pistachio prefers Danerina's company because she is his Pokémon. After this, Chikorita likes Almond, and then Charmander.
- Bayleef: A male Bayleef who belongs to a traveling psychic named Akira. He likes Chiko, but she prefers Charmander.
- Azumarill: Apricot's ninja teacher and Marimaru's mother.
- Torchic: Owned by Haruka. Torchic quickly becomes friends with Pikachu and Clefairy. She then meets Poochyena, and they often argue. Soon after, she meets Mightyena, Poochyena's older brother, and she likes him. Torchic doesn't want to evolve because she thinks Combusken and Blaziken aren't cute and wants to stay adorable.
- Poochyena: Owned by Kanata. Torchic first thought he was a prince. Poochyena and Torchic don't always get along; he calls her "shorty," and she calls him "hick-Poochy." However, he congratulates her when she does well in a Contest and comforts her when she's upset.
- Mightyena: Poochyena's older brother. Mightyena meets Torchic and likes her. Unlike his brother, he is much more patient with Torchic.
Other Pokémon You Might See
- Articuno: A male legendary bird Pokémon. People once thought he kept lost travelers in the mountains, but he actually runs a friendly snowcone shop! He challenges Pikachu, Clefairy, and Jigglypuff to eat 50 snowcones. He also saved Hazel when she got hurt skiing.
- Onix: A harmless and friendly rock snake Pokémon. He sometimes appears to help humans. He also shows up as a strong opponent in battles. Almond's Squirtle defeats him with a Water Gun attack, and Onix rewards them with a special stone.
- Tangela: A Pokémon that looks like a tangle of vines with a small face hidden inside. Hazel wanted to see Tangela's face, but Tangela got scared by Hazel's curiosity and wrapped around her. Luckily, the misunderstanding was cleared up. Tangela, who talks by pressing a vine to someone's forehead, agreed to let Hazel see its face. But because of Hazel's clumsy painting skills, only Hazel knows what Tangela truly looks like.
- Dragonair: A male dragon Pokémon who makes it snow. When he met Jigglypuff, she asked him where Articuno's hideout was, and he showed them the way.
- Jynx: A fortune-teller who can read minds of both humans and Pokémon with her magic ball. Arbok wanted to tell her he liked Jigglypuff's sister, Wigglytuff.
- Pidgeot: He is in love with Pidgetta. He leads three Pidgeotto, who are his helpers. Hazel mistakenly thought they were going to eat Pikachu, but they had tied him up as a gift for Pidgetta. Pidgeot will do anything to win her back.
- Pidgetta: A female Pidgeotto. She doesn't like Pidgeot bringing her gifts to match her beauty. She only wants the wilted flower that Hazel picked. She eventually falls in love with him again.
- Golbat: Unfriendly bat Pokémon. They hunt other Pokémon in dark caves and attack intruders by finding them with their sonic waves.
- Ditto (hot springs): These shapeshifting Dittos are found at a hot springs resort. Once, they changed into many Pikachus, which caused a bit of trouble for Hazel and her friends. They apologized and left after playing some tricks. This Ditto is not the same as Ditto the ninja master.
- Treecko: A wood gecko Pokémon who likes to tease Torchic by plucking her feathers. He has two sisters, Grovyle and Sceptile.
- Ralts, Kirlia, and Gardevoir: These Pokémon cause trouble in the Chamo-Chamo Pretty spin-off. They were upset because they didn't get chocolates during Valentine's Day.
