Malcolm-Jamal Warner (August 18, 1970 – July 20, 2025) was an American actor, musician, and poet. He became very well-known for playing Theo Huxtable on the popular TV show The Cosby Show from 1984 to 1992. This role earned him a nomination for a special acting award. He also starred in other TV shows like Malcolm & Eddie, Reed Between the Lines, and the medical drama The Resident. In 2015, Warner won a Grammy Award for Best Traditional R&B Performance for his work on the song "Jesus Children."

Early Life and Beginnings

Malcolm-Jamal Warner was born in Jersey City, New Jersey, on August 18, 1970. He moved to Los Angeles when he was five years old. From a young age, around nine, he loved performing. This led him to attend acting schools. He even graduated high school from a special school for young performers in New York City.

A Look at His Career

Acting Roles on Screen

Warner landed his most famous role as Theo Huxtable on the NBC sitcom The Cosby Show. He played Theo, the only son of the main character, from 1984 to 1992. Warner auditioned for the role on the very last day of a nationwide search. In 1986, he was nominated for an Emmy Award for his acting in the show.

Warner appeared as a guest star in an episode of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. He played Hilary Banks' boyfriend. He also hosted CBS Storybreak, a children's show that encouraged reading, in 1993 and 1994. Warner played a U.S. Marshal in the film Drop Zone (1994). He also appeared in the HBO film The Tuskegee Airmen (1995).

From 1996 to 2000, Warner starred with comedian Eddie Griffin in the sitcom Malcolm & Eddie. He later played Kurdy Malloy in Jeremiah (2002–2004). He was also the voice of The Producer character on The Magic School Bus. In 2004, he appeared in the CBS sitcom Listen Up.

In 2008, he played Cordell in the romantic comedy film Fool's Gold. He also guest starred in the TNT series HawthoRNe in 2009. From 2011 to 2012, he appeared in Community as Andre. Andre was the ex-husband of Shirley Bennett. His character wore a "Cosby sweater" that he said was from his dad. This was a fun nod to his past role.

Warner co-starred in BET's TV series Reed Between the Lines in 2011. He played Alex Reed, an English professor. His character was married to Carla Reed, a psychologist. They had three children together. The show explored their lives as a blended family. In 2012, Warner was nominated for an NAACP Image Award for his role.

On Major Crimes (2014–2015), Warner played Lt. Chuck Cooper. He was part of the LAPD's Special Investigation's Section. Warner played Al Cowlings in the 2016 crime series American Crime Story. He also played prison counselor Julius Rowe on Suits (2016–2017). He was parole officer James Bagwell on Sneaky Pete. From 2018, he appeared as Dr. AJ "The Raptor" Austin on FOX's The Resident.

Directing Behind the Scenes

While working on The Cosby Show, Warner also started directing. He directed music videos for artists like New Edition and Special Ed. He also directed episodes of popular sitcoms. These included The Cosby Show, All That, Kenan & Kel, Malcolm & Eddie, and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Warner also directed a public health video. This video helped educate young people about important health topics.

Music and Poetry

In 2003, Warner released his first jazz-funk music collection, The Miles Long Mixtape. He followed up with his second CD, Love & Other Social Issues, in 2007. In 2015, he won a Grammy Award for Best Traditional R&B Performance. This was for his part in a cover of Stevie Wonder's song "Jesus Children of America." Warner performed a poem on the track. It was dedicated to the victims of a tragic event. He worked with musicians Robert Glasper Experiment and Lalah Hathaway on this song.

Warner played bass guitar and performed with a band. He would recite his poetry over their music. His 2022 spoken word poetry album, Hiding in Plain View, was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Spoken Word Poetry Album. This was the first year this new Grammy category was included.

Podcasting Adventures

In June 2024, Warner started a podcast called Not All Hood (NAH). He co-hosted it with Weusi Baraka and Candace Kelley. The podcast discussed the lives and experiences of Black Americans.

Personal Life and Passing

Malcolm-Jamal Warner had relationships with other actors. This included Michelle Thomas, who played his girlfriend on The Cosby Show. She passed away in 1998. He later married and had a daughter. He kept their identities private.

Warner passed away on July 20, 2025, at 54 years old.

After his passing, many public figures shared their tributes. Bill Cosby shared his sadness. Actor Morris Chestnut praised Warner as "kind and genuine."
