Malden is a city in the state of Missouri, United States. It is located in the northeast part of Dunklin County. The city is found near where Missouri Route 25 and U.S. Route 62 meet.

In 2020, about 3,706 people lived in Malden. The city is part of Missouri's 8th congressional district.

History of Malden

Malden was officially planned out in 1877. This was done by an official from the railroad. Some people think the city was named after Colonel T. H. Mauldin, who was a county judge. Others believe the name came from Malden, Massachusetts. A post office has been open in Malden since 1877.

Geography and Location

Malden is located in an area of Missouri known as the Missouri Bootheel. It is also within the New Madrid Seismic Zone. This means the area can experience earthquakes. The city is about 23 miles (37 km) west of New Madrid. It is also close to the Mississippi River.

Malden is situated along the Crowley's Ridge Parkway. This is a scenic route. The city covers a total area of about 7.53 square miles (19.50 sq km). All of this area is land.

Transportation in Malden

Malden Municipal Airport History

The Malden Municipal Airport used to be an Army airfield. It was also an Air Force base from 1942 to 1960. It was used to train pilots for World War II and the Korean War.

The Malden Army Airfield Preservation Society (MAAPS) works to save the history of the Malden Army Airfield. The MAAPS Military Museum is located at the airport. MAAPS also has a Veterans Wall of Honor. This wall remembers people who served in the military.

Education in Malden

Most of Malden is part of the Malden R-I School District. This district is known for its sports teams. The school mascot is the Green Wave. The boys' track team won state championships in 2007. The football team went to the state playoffs in 2010. The boys' baseball team won a district title in 2011.

Malden High School has been recognized as one of the top high schools in America. It was also ranked as the best school in southeast Missouri in 2009-2010. The Malden School Board was named the Outstanding Board of the Year in 2011.
