Malibu is a special coconut-flavored drink. It is made with Caribbean rum and has a certain amount of alcohol, which is 21% of its total volume. Since 2017, the Malibu brand has been owned by a company called Pernod Ricard. They often describe it as a "flavored rum" in places where this is allowed by local rules.
History of Malibu
Malibu was first created by a person named Tom Jago. He worked for a company called International Distillers & Vintners. The drink was first made in Curaçao. It was made from fruit spirits and flavored with rum and coconut.
At first, Malibu was made to help bartenders easily mix drinks like piña coladas. It became very popular, so its production moved to Barbados. In Barbados, the rum for Malibu is made by a company called West Indies Rum Distillery Ltd.. Moving production helped make the ingredients even better.
Over the years, the Malibu brand changed owners. In 2002, a company called Diageo sold Malibu to Allied Domecq. Then, in 2005, a French company named Pernod Ricard bought Allied Domecq. This big deal meant that Pernod Ricard became the owner of many different drink brands, including Malibu.
How Malibu is Advertised
In the past, Malibu's advertisements used the slogan "seriously easy going." These ads often showed people from the Caribbean acting very seriously. This was a funny way to show how different their calm life was from the busy life in Western cities. At the end of the ads, a voice would say, "If people in the Caribbean took life as seriously as this, they would never have invented Malibu. It's seriously easy going."
It's interesting because these ads focus on the Caribbean. However, the name "Malibu" actually comes from a town in California, not the Caribbean region.
Since 2014, Malibu's advertising has changed. Now, the campaigns encourage people to have their "best summer ever." They use videos on YouTube and TV commercials. These ads show the difference between how you act during "summer you" and "rest of the year you." In 2016, Malibu also started an online campaign. They created a shopping website and used the hashtag #Malibu on social media.
Different Kinds of Malibu
The first and most well-known Malibu drink is flavored with coconut. But there are many other kinds of Malibu available around the world. These different versions are flavored with various tropical fruits.
Some of these fruit flavors include banana, pineapple, passion fruit, island melon, and mango. There is also a special mix with mint, which is called Malibu Fresh. Another version is mixed with tequila and is known as Malibu Red. There is also a stronger version called Malibu Black. This one is a 35% alcohol by volume (ABV) drink. It mixes dark rum with the original coconut-flavored drink.
