History of Mameyal
How Puerto Rico Became Part of the U.S.
Puerto Rico used to belong to Spain. After the Spanish–American War, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of a peace agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898.
Puerto Rico then became an "unincorporated territory" of the United States. This means it is part of the U.S. but does not have all the same rights as a U.S. state.
Early Population Counts
In 1899, the United States government took a count of all the people in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. The census found that 169 people lived in the Mameyal barrio at that time.
The population of Mameyal has changed a lot over the years. Here's how many people lived there during different census years:

Sectors and Local Areas
What are Sectors?
Barrios like Mameyal are often divided into even smaller local areas. These smaller areas are called sectores (which means sectors in English). Think of them like neighborhoods within a larger area.
Types of Sectors
The names for these sectores can be different. Some are just called "sector." Others might be called urbanización (a planned housing area), reparto (a land division), barriada (a neighborhood), or residencial (a residential complex).
Comunidad Mameyal Sector
There is a specific sector called Comunidad Mameyal. Even though it has "Mameyal" in its name, this sector is actually counted as part of the Higuillar barrio.
