Exploring Mammoth, Utah
Mammoth is located in Mammoth Canyon. This canyon is on the western side of the East Tintic Mountains. The town sits about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) west of Mammoth Peak. It is also about 3 miles (4.8 km) south of Eureka. The town's elevation is about 6,391 feet (1,948 m) above sea level.
Mammoth was started around 1870. This was during a time when many mining towns grew quickly. They would then often shrink just as fast. The town got its name from the important Mammoth Mine nearby.
The History of Mammoth
Early Mining Days
The Mammoth Mine was found in February 1870. This was at the same time as the town of Eureka was settled. Miners quickly moved into the area. This caused Mammoth to become a busy boomtown.
Life in Mammoth was not easy. The area was far away from other towns. There was also no water nearby. The mines brought in water for their machines. But people had to buy their drinking water. It cost ten cents for each gallon.
Mining Success
The mines around Mammoth produced valuable ore. They also found silver and gold. The Mammoth Mine kept producing for about 75 years. Mammoth was part of the Tintic Mining District. This district included other towns and mines. It was very important for the mining economy. This was true for both the Utah Territory and later the State of Utah.
Town Growth and Decline
Mammoth was busiest between 1900 and 1910. At that time, about 2,500 to 3,000 people lived there. The town had a school and four large hotels. It also had many other businesses. Mammoth officially became a town in 1910.
However, the town started to shrink soon after. By 1930, only 750 people lived there. The town stopped being an official town on November 29, 1929.
Mammoth Today
Today, some people still live in Mammoth. There is still some smaller mining for metals in the area.
The area is also popular with people who like ghost towns. Many visitors enjoy camping there. Others like riding off-road vehicles or going hiking.
