Manchester is a small community in Mendocino County, California, United States. It is a census-designated place, which means it's an area defined by the government for counting people. It is not an officially incorporated town. Manchester is located about 5 miles (8 km) north of Point Arena. It sits at an elevation of 85 feet (26 meters) above sea level. In 2020, about 159 people lived there.

History of Manchester

The first post office in Manchester opened in 1871. It closed for a short time in 1876 but reopened in 1877. The community was named after Manchester, England. An early settler chose the name because it was their former home.

Geography of Manchester

Manchester is in the southwestern part of Mendocino County. It is located along California State Route 1, a famous highway that runs along the coast. The community is about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) inland from the Pacific Ocean.

Route 1 goes north from Manchester for about 29 miles (47 km) to Mendocino. If you go south, it passes through Point Arena and continues for about 67 miles (108 km) to Bodega Bay.

The area of Manchester covers about 2.6 square miles (6.7 square kilometers). All of this area is land. To the west of Manchester, you will find Manchester State Park.

Manchester has a type of weather called a warm-summer Mediterranean climate. This means it has warm, but not extremely hot, and dry summers. The average monthly temperatures do not go above 71.6°F (22°C). This climate is often called "Csb" on climate maps.
