History of Manhattan Beach

Manhattan Beach was once a fancy resort area. It was one of three main resorts that grew near Coney Island after the American Civil War.

How Manhattan Beach Became a Resort

In the late 1800s, a man named Austin Corbin helped develop Manhattan Beach. He was the president of the Long Island Rail Road. In 1877, Corbin built the famous Manhattan Beach Hotel. Later, in 1880, he built an even grander hotel called the Oriental Hotel. A street in the neighborhood, "Corbin Place," was named after him.

Hotels and Entertainment

The Coney Island Jockey Club, a horse racing track, opened near the Oriental Hotel. These hotels and the racetrack brought many visitors to Manhattan Beach. The hotels had daily concerts with famous conductors like Gilmore and Sousa. They also put on amazing nightly fireworks shows. These events made Manhattan Beach a very popular summer resort by the sea.

Changes Over Time

Austin Corbin had rules that prevented some people from staying at his resort or buying land there. After he passed away, these rules were stopped. The neighborhood then welcomed many Jewish residents.

Over time, the hotel business in the area changed. The land where the Manhattan Beach Hotel once stood was turned into homes and a public park. Manhattan Beach Park opened in 1955. It helped reduce crowding at the nearby beaches of Coney Island and Brighton Beach. This park is still open to the public today.

From 1954 to 1959, the neighborhood was home to the Manhattan Beach Air Force Station. This was a military base. The Manhattan Beach Jewish Center is an important building in the area. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2015.

There are also private schools in the area. These include the Yeshiva of Manhattan Beach, which is a Jewish day school for grades K–8. Another is the Yeshiva Gedolah Bais Shimon of Manhattan Beach, a program for rabbinical studies after high school.

Corbin Place was originally named after Austin Corbin, who developed Manhattan Beach. However, in 2007, its name was changed to M. Corbin Place. This new name honors Margaret Corbin, an American Revolutionary War patriot. This change happened because Austin Corbin had rules that kept Jewish guests out of his hotel and prevented Jewish people from buying land in the area.
