Manston is a cool suburb and former village located in Leeds, England. It's about 4 miles (6.4 km) east of the busy Leeds city centre. Imagine a place that used to be a small village but is now part of a bigger city – that's Manston!

Exploring Manston's Location

Manston is found in the Cross Gates & Whinmoor area of Leeds City Council. It's also part of the Leeds East parliamentary area. This means it has local representatives who help make decisions for the community.

The area sits just east of the A6120 Outer Ring Road. This big road helps people travel around Leeds. Manston is also located between Barwick Road to the north and Austhorpe Road to the south.

What's in a Name?

Manston gets its name from the old Manston Hall. This hall was on Manston Lane and belonged to the important Gascoigne family. Many streets in the area, like Manston Crescent and Manston Grove, are named after this historic estate.

Fun Places in Manston

Manston is home to Manston Park, a great public park where you can relax and play. There's also a pub called The Barnbow, which used to be known as The Manston Hotel. It's located just east of the park.

Schools and Churches

You'll find a local church and a primary school in Manston named after St James the Great. The school is called Manston St James Primary Academy. There are two other primary schools in the area too: Manston Primary and St Theresa's Catholic Primary Schools.

A Look Back at Barnbow

Manston also includes an area called Barnbow. This spot was once a very important factory that made munitions (things like ammunition) during both the First World War and the Second World War. It was also active in the years between these wars.

Today, Barnbow is a protected historical site. In Manston Park, there's a special memorial. It remembers the people who worked at the munitions factory and sadly lost their lives during a tragic event on December 5, 1916.
