History of Marcus
The town of Marcus was named after Marcus Oppenheimer. He was one of the first settlers in the area, arriving in 1863.
Marcus played an important role during the Big Bend Gold Rush in the 1860s. Gold seekers traveling north to the Colony of British Columbia often used Marcus as a supply and transportation base. This was because of its location just above Kettle Falls. These falls were a natural barrier that stopped boats from going further up the river.
In 1865, a steamboat called the Forty-Nine was built in Marcus. This boat tried to reach La Porte, a gold rush town located near the dangerous Dalles des Morts (meaning "Death Rapids"). Regular steamboat service from Marcus to La Porte began in 1866. This was after difficult winter conditions made the first attempt in 1865 hard.
Marcus officially became an incorporated town on October 18, 1910. Later, the original townsite was covered by water. This happened when Grand Coulee Dam was built, creating Franklin D. Roosevelt Lake.
