Where Marcus Borg Grew Up
Marcus Borg was born on March 11, 1942, in Fergus Falls, Minnesota. He grew up in North Dakota in a family that followed the Lutheran faith.
His College Years and Studies
After high school, Borg went to Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota. There, he studied both political science and philosophy. Even though he had some doubts about faith as a young adult, he later received a special scholarship. This allowed him to study at Union Theological Seminary in New York City.
At the seminary, he learned about modern ways of thinking about religion, called liberal theology. A thinker named W. D. Davies greatly influenced him during this time. After his studies at Union, he went to Mansfield College, Oxford, in England. There, he earned two advanced degrees: a Master of Theology and a Doctor of Philosophy.
