Maria Clementina of Austria was a princess born on April 24, 1777. She was an Austrian archduchess, which means she was a daughter of the Holy Roman Emperor. Maria Clementina was the tenth child and third daughter of Leopold I, Grand Duke of Tuscany and Maria Luisa of Spain. She became the mother of the well-known Duchess of Berry. Maria Clementina passed away on November 15, 1801.
Early Life
Archduchess Maria Clementina was born at the Villa del Poggio Imperiale. This beautiful villa was located in the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. Her father, Leopold I, ruled Tuscany at that time. He later became the Holy Roman Emperor. Maria Clementina was named after her mother's uncle, Prince Clemens Wenceslaus of Saxony.
Marriage and Family
Maria Clementina married Prince Francis, Duke of Calabria. This happened on September 19, 1790, through a special ceremony called a proxy marriage. In a proxy marriage, someone stands in for the bride or groom. They officially married in person on June 26, 1797, in Foggia.
Prince Francis was Maria Clementina's first cousin. He was the oldest son of Ferdinand IV of Naples and Maria Carolina of Austria. Francis was the Heir apparent, meaning he was next in line to become king of both Naples and Sicily.
This marriage was one of several between the Austrian and Neapolitan royal families. Maria Clementina and Francis were "double first cousins." This means they shared all of their grandparents. They had two children together.
Maria Clementina died in Naples in 1801. Her health had become poor after giving birth to her son the previous year. It is believed she died from a lung illness, possibly tuberculosis. She was buried in the Basilica of Santa Chiara in Naples, alongside her young son.
After Her Death
After Maria Clementina's death, her husband, Prince Francis, married again. He married Infanta Maria Isabella of Spain. She was also his first cousin. Maria Isabella was the youngest daughter of Charles IV of Spain. Charles IV was the brother of Maria Clementina's mother.
Maria Clementina's only daughter, Carolina, grew up and married Charles Ferdinand, Duke of Berry. Their wedding took place in April 1816. Charles Ferdinand was the son of Charles X of France. Carolina and Charles Ferdinand had children. This means Maria Clementina is an ancestor of some important royal figures today. These include the current Duke of Calabria and his relative, the Duke of Castro.
Children
Maria Clementina and Prince Francis had two children:
- Princess Carolina of Naples and Sicily (born November 5, 1798 – died April 17, 1870). She married Charles Ferdinand, Duke of Berry and had children.
- Prince Ferdinando Francesco d'Assisi of Naples and Sicily (born August 27, 1800 – died July 1, 1801). He passed away when he was a baby.
