Maria Piątkowska (born Maria Ilwicka) was a famous Polish athlete. She was born on February 24, 1931, and passed away on December 19, 2020. Maria was a talented sprinter, hurdler, and long jumper.

She won a gold medal in the 4 × 100 metres relay race at the 1962 European Athletics Championships. She also earned two bronze medals at the European Championships. Maria was a Polish national champion in several events. These included the long jump, pentathlon, and the 80 metres running race.

Maria Piątkowska's Life Story

Maria Ilwicka was born in Goleni, which was part of the Kingdom of Romania at the time. After the Second World War, her family moved to Masuria, a region in Poland.

Maria was a very educated athlete. She graduated from the University of Physical Education in Warsaw.

She was married twice. Her first husband was Henryk Chojnacki, a Polish discus thrower. Later, she married Edmund Piątkowski, who was also a Polish discus thrower and held a national record. Maria and Edmund had two sons together. Edmund Piątkowski passed away in 2016.

Maria Piątkowska died on December 19, 2020, when she was 89 years old.
