Marine on St. Croix started in 1839 as Marine Mills. It was named after Marine, Illinois, where its founders came from. This town was home to Minnesota's first commercial sawmill.
The sawmill was built by David Hone and Lewis Judd. They saw lots of white pine trees along the St. Croix River. The mill started working in August 1839. It was first powered by water, then by steam. It operated until 1895. Over 197 million board feet of lumber were cut here!
Even though the sawmill buildings are gone, you can still see where their foundations were. The Marine Mill site is now a historic place. The Minnesota Historical Society takes care of it.
In 1950, Marine Mills officially became the City of Marine on St. Croix. The city still has many old buildings. These include the General Store (built 1870), the Stone House Museum (1872), the Village Hall (1888), the Lutheran Church, and the Fire Hall.
