Marion Dane Bauer facts for kids
Marion Dane Bauer (born November 20, 1938) is a well-known American author who writes books for children and young adults. She has written many popular stories and won several awards for her work.
Marion Bauer was born on November 20, 1938. She grew up in Oglesby, a small town in Northern Illinois. She went to college at LaSalle-Peru-Oglesby Junior College, the University of Missouri, and the University of Oklahoma. She graduated in 1962.
Marion raised two children. She also taught English at a high school in Wisconsin. Later, she taught creative writing classes in Minnesota. Marion helped start a special writing program at the Vermont College of Fine Arts. This program helps people learn to write for children and young adults. Today, she lives and works in Saint Paul, Minnesota.
Marion wanted to be a writer from a very young age. She remembers making up stories for her dolls and friends. She even used marbles in a cigar box as characters! Her aunt gave her a lot of encouragement when she was a teenager. Her aunt took her writing seriously and told her to keep going. Marion says this support from someone who loved writing really influenced her.
Awards and Recognition
Marion Dane Bauer's books have won many important awards.
- Her book Rain of Fire (1983) won the Jane Addams Children's Book Award in 1984.
- On My Honor (1986) was recognized as a Newbery Honor Book in 1987. It also won the William Allen White Children's Book Award in 1989.
- The book Am I Blue, a collection of stories for young people, won a Lambda Literary Award in 1994. It also received the Stonewall Book Award for literature in 1995.
- Marion Bauer herself received the Kerlan Award in 1996.
- The Longest Night (2009), a picture book, won a 2010 Golden Kite Award for its text.
