Mark "Super" Duper was an amazing American football player. He was a wide receiver for the Miami Dolphins in the National Football League (NFL). He played for them from 1982 to 1992.
Before joining the NFL, he played college football at Northwestern State. The Dolphins picked him in the second round of the 1982 NFL draft. He was so good that he was chosen for the Pro Bowl three times!
Playing for the Miami Dolphins
Mark Duper was nicknamed "Super Duper" because of his incredible skills. He played 11 seasons for the Miami Dolphins. His best years were when he teamed up with Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Marino. He also played alongside another great wide receiver, Mark Clayton. Together, they were known as the "Marks Brothers."
Duper wore jersey number 85. He was selected for the Pro Bowl in 1983, 1984, and 1986. In 1984, he had 71 catches for 1,306 yards and 8 touchdowns. In 1986, he caught 67 passes for 1,313 yards and 11 touchdowns.
He had four seasons where he gained over 1,000 receiving yards. His last 1,000-yard season was in 1991, when he was 32 years old. In 1990, he became only the second Dolphins player to gain over 7,000 career receiving yards. The Dolphins released Duper in 1993. They brought in new players like O.J. McDuffie and Irving Fryar.
Beyond Football: A Track Star
Mark Duper was not just a football star; he was also a talented track athlete. In 1981, he won the 400-meter relay at the NCAA track and field championships. This was while he was at Northwestern State University.
He also competed in the 1980 Olympic trials. He finished seventh in the 200-meter dash. He also made it to the semifinals of the 100-meter race. His fastest times were 10.21 seconds for the 100 meters and 20.77 seconds for the 200 meters.
Career Achievements and Later Life
In his 11 seasons in the NFL, Mark Duper caught 511 passes. He gained a total of 8,869 yards and scored 59 touchdowns. After his NFL career, he played two games for the Miami Hooters in the Arena Football League in 1994.
On November 8, 2013, Mark Duper shared that he was dealing with a brain condition. This condition is often seen in athletes who play contact sports.
Mark Duper was honored by the Miami Dolphins Honor Roll. He was inducted into it on December 15, 2003, along with Mark Clayton.
