Club Career Highlights
Early Days in Denmark
Martin Jørgensen was born in Ryomgård, Denmark. He started playing football at his local club, IF Midtdjurs. In 1989, he joined AGF as a young player. His talent was quickly noticed, and he began playing for different Danish youth national teams from 1991. He played his first senior game for AGF on 8 May 1994. He was part of the AGF team that won the Danish Cup in 1996.
Playing in Italy: Udinese and Fiorentina
In April 1997, Jørgensen moved to Italy to play for Udinese in Serie A, which is Italy's top football league. He helped Udinese finish third in the league during the 1997–98 season. After seven years with Udinese, Jørgensen joined Fiorentina in August 2004.
He became a very important player for Fiorentina's attacks and was loved by the fans. He played as an attacking midfielder, close to the team's strikers. In the 2007–08 season, he also played as a right back. He scored two goals in a UEFA Cup game and helped Fiorentina win a big match against Juventus in March 2008.
Injuries and Important Goals
The 2008–09 season was tough for Jørgensen because of muscle injuries. He was out of the team until February 2009. Even with the injuries, he signed a new contract to stay with Fiorentina until June 2010. He scored a very important goal in the last minute against Lecce. This goal helped Fiorentina get a spot in the UEFA Champions League, which is a huge competition for European clubs.
On 9 December 2009, Jørgensen scored his first ever Champions League goal. It was against Liverpool at their home stadium, Anfield. Fiorentina won that game 2–1 and finished first in their group.
Return to AGF and Retirement
On 31 January 2010, Jørgensen returned to his first club, AGF, in Denmark. He had six months left on his contract with Fiorentina. On 11 November 2014, Martin Jørgensen announced that he would retire from playing football at the end of 2014.
