Mary Paulet, Lady Cromwell (born around 1540 – died 10 October 1592) was an English noblewoman. She was the daughter of John Paulet, 2nd Marquess of Winchester, a very important noble from Old Basing, Hampshire. Her mother was Elizabeth Willoughby.
Family Life and Marriage
Mary Paulet married Henry Cromwell, 2nd Baron Cromwell before the year 1560. Henry was born in 1538 and died on 20 November 1592. Interestingly, Henry was the son of her father's second wife, Elizabeth Seymour, Baroness Cromwell. This means Mary and Henry were step-siblings through their parents' later marriages.
Mary and Henry's Children
Mary and Henry had three children together:
- Edward Cromwell, 3rd Baron Cromwell (born around 1560 – died 27 April 1607). Edward married twice. His first wife was Elizabeth Upton. His second wife was Frances Rugge. With Frances, he had a son named Thomas Cromwell, 1st Earl of Ardglass and two daughters, Frances and Anne. Edward was a soldier and fought alongside the Earl of Essex in a trip against Spain. He was made a knight in Dublin in 1599.
- Sir Gregory Cromwell. Gregory married Frances, who was the daughter of Sir Edward Griffin. King James I made Gregory a knight in 1603.
- Katharine Cromwell (died 24 March 1621). Katharine married Sir Lionel Tollemache, 1st Baronet on 10 February 1581. They lived in Helmingham, Suffolk. They had a son named Sir Lionel Tollemache, 2nd Baronet.
Death and Burial
Mary Paulet passed away in North Elmham, Norfolk, on 10 October 1592. She was buried on 23 October at Launde Abbey in Leicestershire. Her husband, Henry Cromwell, died shortly after her on 20 November 1592, also in North Elmham. He was buried on 4 December, also at Launde Abbey.
