Masanori Kanehara's Fighting Journey
Starting His Career
Masanori Kanehara began his professional MMA journey in 2003. Before joining World Victory Road, he had a record of 13 wins, 6 losses, and 5 draws. This showed he was a promising fighter.
Winning the Sengoku Featherweight Grand Prix
Kanehara joined World Victory Road's Featherweight Grand Prix. He won two tough fights to reach the semi-finals. He beat Jong Man Kim and then Chan Sung Jung by decision.
He lost in the semi-finals to Hatsu Hioki. However, Hioki couldn't fight in the final due to an injury. So, Kanehara stepped in to face judo fighter Michihiro Omigawa. Even though many people didn't expect him to win, Kanehara won the tournament! This made him the 2009 Sengoku Featherweight Grand Prix Champion. He also became the first Sengoku Featherweight Champion.
After this big win, Kanehara faced Marlon Sandro for the Featherweight title. This fight took place at World Victory Road Presents: Sengoku 13. Kanehara lost the fight by KO in the first round.
After Sengoku
After the Sengoku organization ended, Kanehara continued to fight. He won 7 out of 9 fights. One of his notable wins was a quick 21-second knockout of Joe Pearson at Pancrase 252.
Fighting in the UFC
In 2014, Kanehara signed with the UFC, a very famous MMA promotion. He was set to fight Urijah Faber, but the opponent changed. Instead, he faced Alex Caceres in his UFC debut. Kanehara won this fight by a unanimous decision, which means all judges agreed he won.
His next UFC fight was against Rani Yahya in 2015. There were some travel problems for international fighters at that time. So, their fight was delayed. When they finally fought, Kanehara lost by a split decision. This means some judges thought he won, but others thought Yahya won.
